Home again, Home again!

Sunday, July 29th, 2012

I am home from my whirlwind trip to IQF Long Beach. It was such fun, especially after Karen and Terry arrived on Friday to keep me company. We were so excited to hear the wonderful comments about our Twelve by Twelve exhibit. I loved hanging out there, listening to the comments. Sometimes I would introduce myself and then I would be held captive to answer questions!!

Here is a photo of the three of us with Del, taken on Friday. Del was so thrilled with the reception the exhibit received. I am so happy we did her proud.

On Friday night, Del and her friends, Sherry and Jim who live on the water in Long Beach, treated us to a Duffy boat ride and dinner at the Long Beach Yacht Club. Here is the boat. It is electric and very comfy.

Here are some of the sights seen from the boat. A putt putt boat with a mutt.

And a person powered Gondola:

It was high tide so we often had to turn around because we could not get under a bridge. We enjoyed navigating the canals of Naples and looking at all the beautiful homes.

Yesterday before I left, I saw this sight out my window:

It was a canopy for an Indian wedding. When I was waiting in the lobby, I saw drool worthy Indian saris on beautiful women. The men were wearing some cool outfits, too.

I arrived home last evening and Steph and Jack and Miles picked me up and we stopped for dinner at one of Miles’ favorite restaurants. Steve was at an anniversary party for friends that I had to miss because I got in too late and Mia is in San Francisco with Lisa and Clay. She will be attending the Young Artists Program at California College of Art for the next two weeks. She is having quite the summer.

Today, I spent some quality time with Mr C and Scooter who seemed to have missed me!!

I was excited to find this fabric from Frieda Anderson when I got home. I am going to use it for a piece for our Rhythm and Hues show.

I am only one day behind with my 3 x 3s. Here are two more.

IQF Long Beach

Thursday, July 26th, 2012

I flew to Long Beach today to see the Twelve by 12 Quilts and the Rituals exhibit. Seeing our quilts all together took my breath away, again.

It is always fun to interact with people viewing our quilts. Several told me it was the best exhibit in the show.

I love this poster with all of our photos.

Del Thomas, who is our angel for sponsoring the exhibit in the three IQF venues, was here tonight and I snapped this photo of her with the quilts.

I have a quilt in the Rituals exhibit. Photos are not allowed, but Leslie Jenison, one of the curators, took this photo of me with the Scooter and Mr C quilt.

I have a nice room on the lower floor of the Hyatt, overlooking the lagoon. It is very peaceful and quiet and since I have some SDA work to do, it is nice to have this space to myself. Here is my view.

This is yesterday’s 3 x 3. There won’t be any more until I get back home.

I have to get to work and then get some sleep. I am on duty at 9:30 in the morning at the SAQA booth.

I Love Summer in Oregon

Friday, July 13th, 2012

I had another very pleasant day, just being. We are having those perfect summer Oregon days — warm and breezy. I hosted an exhibit opening at Trinity tonight, 6 – 8 pm. We stopped and picked up some grilled salmon and tabouleh salad at New Seasons and ate on the deck in the lovely summer air with the dwindling light. It was lovely.

I noticed that I had gotten a wonky photo of Persephone so I rephotographed her today.

I also finished the edges on the water quilt and made a sleeve. Tomorrow, I will finish the sleeves and labels and make the hanging devices and get everything photographed.

I need to look at some calls for entry and start work on some new projects. I hope you are having a lovely week-end, too.

Persephone and Pomegranates

Thursday, July 12th, 2012

Today is the reveal for the Twelve by 12/20 mythology challenge. To read the story of the myth, please go to the Twelve blog.

I made this piece with batiks as I have the others in this series. I love working with them and mixing them up in a design. This time, I did all the quilting with black thread. When I first made this, I was not going to put a figure in it. I really do not like the human figure used in quilts. I don’t know why and don’t flame me!!

So, I had an idea of how I could add Persephone to this and not have to worry too much about creating a body. I made this drawing.

I then scanned it and printed it on silk organza. I carefully cut it and fused it to the quilt and then stitched it with black thread and added a pomegranate.

Here are a couple of details:

I have had a busy and productive day, getting ready for the STASH meeting today and finishing my water piece. Here is Wednesday’s 3 x 3.

Re-Zoom Zoom

Tuesday, July 10th, 2012

After a good night’s sleep and some meds, I felt much better and was zooming around the studio once again.

I had a sudden and enlightened idea about a finishing touch for my myth piece for the Twelve by Twelve reveal on Thursday. I spent the morning working that out. It meant doing a drawing and printing on organza and stitching it to the otherwise finished piece. I am really happy with it. Check back on Thursday for a look at what I did.

I also sewed two sleeves for the air and fire pieces and started getting the finishing touches done on them.

I also painted a big piece of canvas with gesso for a fun project with my STASH group on Thursday. Tomorrow, I have to get some things cleaned up and do some prep work for the lunch that I am preparing for them.

Last night when I went to bed, I felt really doubtful about where I was going with the deep sea piece. In the light of day, it didn’t look that bad and so throughout the day, I worked on it bit by bit. Tonight, I got it fused together, and I hope to do some quilting on it tomorrow. I really love the colors in this.

I found this great fabric for the back.

Mia gets home tomorrow from her two week adventure in the wilderness. We can’t wait to see her and hear all about the other kids and the adventures that she had.
