This and That

EBhomeworkJuly

I promised an update on what has been going on in my life. First of all, lots of good things. Mr C and I got to take a preview ride on the new Orange light rail line that crosses the Willamette on a brand new bridge and goes out through our old neighborhood. We watched it all being built for the last few years. So that was fun.

My art quilt daughter, Kristin La Flamme and her family, have made the move to Portland. I am so excited to have them here. There worldly goods are not arriving until the end of this week and so I had them over for dinner in our air conditioned condo on a 100° plus day. The highlight was the homemade peach ice cream that I made.

We also had a double date with Lisa and Clay and saw the very funny Amy Schumer movie, Train Wreck.

Icing on the cake was a visit with my long time interwebs friend, Mary Manahan from Philadelphia, whose daughter is starting law school at Lewis and Clark.

My disappointment last week was not getting into the High Fiber Diet Making Our Mark show. It is the first time I have not had a piece in the annual show. Such a bummer. I was really despondent and had a crisis of confidence regarding my work. Here are thumbnails of the the two entries:

I will be interested to see the pieces that did make it in. Some were given alternate status, meaning they would get an airing when the venue was large enough. I’m sure glad I am not an alternate – that would tie up two pieces for over a year with no guarantee of being in an exhibit.

I did, get great news a couple of days ago. Ode to a Tree made it into the Oregon SAQA show and if I had a choice of shows to be in, it would be this one. They have quite a few venues lined up already. Here is a thumbnail of Ode to a Tree:

Ode-to-a-Tree

There was one other fail which I can’t discuss at this point. I might show the piece at some point.

The piece up at the top is almost finished for my July master class – late because I had a heck of a busy end of July. The theme was rhythm. I have to finish quilting it when I get home. I really like it

I am currently on the coast in Lincoln City in a cabin with Mr C and Scooter. We arrived last night. We are staying in a cabin at this funky motel on a cliff looking out over the Pacific Ocean.

We awoke to a beautiful sunny morning.

Today was day one of a mixed media/encaustic/fiber workshop with Lorraine Glessner at the Sitka Art and Ecology Center. It was awesome. I felt so refreshed and relaxed and happy when I came back to the cabin tonight.

Here is Lorraine getting ready to lecture.

Our first task was to learn about how she rusts fabric and do some of our own. Here is a sample of her rusted silk.

Here is my salt water soaked fabric with rusty bits doing their thing. I have a piece of dyed cheese cloth that and a couple of pieces of cotton.

Here are some of the goodies that we are working with.

We started out just learning how to use the wax and to scrape it to expose layers. She made us get up and move to another persons piece and add a mark and some wax and we kept moving around the room. It was very liberating to leave our precious piece to others and to them work on someone else’s piece. I really liked what had happened to mine when I came back to it.

Here it is:

Here is how I left it tonight: (iPhone photo is a quite blurry, but I really love it.)

So, there we go. I have such a great life. I have to move on and not let one disappointment take me down.

Just took this at the end of our street.

Some Time Out

GNPweb

After getting 3 quilts done and photographed, sewing facings, making labels and travel bags, I had to take some time to breath.  Here is the travel bag that I made for the finished Glacier National Park piece which is 24 inches square. It would not roll easily so this is a great way to send out into the world. The plastic sleeve has a photo and identification information.

Yesterday, I cleaned up the sewing room which was a bit of a disaster. Lisa and Clay called and wanted to come and hang out and have dinner with us. I love to have them stop by.

Today, I headed to the studio to get some work done. I got the July Printed Fabric Piece done – the theme is insects. I will post photos at the end of the month.

I am behind on my Master Class homework for this month. The theme is rhythm. I need to do a little work on my sketch. I want to do some layering with silk organza and silk charmeuse so I painted some organza to use. Here it is still wet.

It has been nice to have a few days without looming deadlines.

Blue Exhibit Opening and Current Work

hhfdblues

This afternoon, Mr C and I braved the traffic on I-5 and drove up to Longview, WA to see the High Fiber Diet exhibit, What’s Blue to You, at the Lower Columbia College Art Center. The gallery was quite lovely and the show looked fantastic. I loved how they hung the blue and orange pieces together. You can see Blue Picasso Woman in this shot.

We drove home on a different route, more back roads and it was lovely. We stopped at Burgerville for supper so that I could have Walla Walla onion rings.

I have been working on a neutrals piece for the next HFD show. It is composed of black and white photos from our trip to Glacier National Park. I printed them on Jacquard Extravorganza.

glacierphotos

I created pdfs of the photos and printed them poster style and fused them together to make them larger for the piece I am doing. I created a thermofax to print the title.

I am doing some handstitching on each photo.

Our hot, hot weather has finally abated and it was quite lovely today. What a relief.

I didn’t post a photo of Walking with Scooter and Mr C – you have seen it often enough.

I have been busy since I last posted. I made it through my first art quilt workshop at Trinity. I had a lovely Mother’s day with my girls.

I have also been working on my Master Class May assignment. More about that tomorrow!

This may be a record for me! Seventeen days since my last post. I don’t have any exciting reason. I got a really nasty sinus infection with the worst vertigo. Ended up in bed for a few days. Then, this past week, I had a hectic schedule. On Monday, Mr C and I helped to hang the SAQA Oregon Exploring Layers show at the AIR Gallery in Pioneer Place, downtown Portland. It will be there through May 17th. The Gallery is open Thursday – Sunday, noon to 6 pm. That is Walking with Scooter and Mr C hanging at the show.

On Tuesday, I got caught up with some SDA work. On Wednesday, I joined a large group of SAQA members for a docent tour at the Portland Art Museum of Italian Style, a comprehensive look at Italian fashion from the end of the Second World War to the present day.  It was fantastic. I had lunch with friends and then took the street car back home.

On Wednesday night, I went to Trinity for the latest art short course. This month, we are screen printing. I could, of course, teach this class, but it is fun to be a participant. We used torn and cut paper to make our designs. First, I cut craft paper into rectangles in a pattern. by folding and cutting.

cutpaper1

Then, I cut circles in freezer paper.

cutpaper2

Her is my first print from the rectangles.

plackrectangleprint

Then, I printed magenta circles.

trinityprint1

We printed on paper. I am quite happy with this.

On Thursday, I got my neglected hair cut an colored. I felt so much better. Mr C and I took the street car downtown to a symphony concert. It was a one hour free concert for donors, educators and other community folks. It was at 6 pm and and then we stopped at one of the breweries for supper.

On Friday, I got lots of errands done. I found some steel rods to use for my 3-D construction and have started work. Hopefully, I can share some progress tomorrow. I also produced the Constant Contact newsetter for Columbia FiberArts Guild and got it sent Friday night. Whew!

On Saturday, I met a friend at 8:30 in the morning and we drove down to Silverton for our Oregon Critique group meeting. This was the beautiful view of the Silver Lake reservoir from Carol’s deck. So pretty and peaceful.

viewatCarols

Our critic was an artist from Salem. I thought she was a bit too complimentary of our work. Didn’t really get much out of it. I did enjoy seeing the work the others have done.

Betty and I left, Silverton and then went to Pioneer Place to set up for the opening reception of the exhibit. Hung out there until 9 pm, when Mr C came and picked me up. Today, I have been trying to recover from the week and to get caught up on SDA work! Here is a shot from the show. It looks great.

explorelayers1

So, now we are all caught up. I hope I can get back to my regular blogging schedule again.
