Making

feltpetalpinchushions

I love to make things. I don’t like to do production work, but I love to make a few things to give to friends. That is what I did last night. I followed the directions for Jamie Fingal’s Felted Flower Pincushions. She uses rectangle tins, but I am a devotee of Trader Joe’s dark chocolate triangles that come in round tins. I have been saving the tins to do something like this.

First, I lightly sanded the tins.

I used Washi tape to cover the sides. I love this tape with the scissors.

Here are some more photos of the ones I gave to my friends in STASH today at our Christmas lunch.

I used wool felt that I purchased at JoAnn’s. I threw in a hot wash and the dryer and it crinkles up nicely.

I then cut one inch strips which I rolled together and stitched with a long needle and perle cotton.

I am excited because tomorrow I am going to look at a possible studio that I can move into the first week in January!!

I finished sorting and ironing the Japanese fabrics today. I think I will be listing my fabrics for sale over the week-end or early next week.

Thanks for checking in!

There Was Snow

Monday, December 9th, 2013

pileofbatiks

Yes, indeed, there was snow and then we have had several days of below freezing temps. Out furnace, like many in Portland, has failed to come on in the morning because it is in the attic and the condensation drain froze. Steve got it to start on Sunday, by using a hair dryer. Today, it was more problematic. It took a while. Thank goodness, the furnace downstairs is working just fine and so I holed up down there, working on a way to destash the fabrics that did not selll.

I had just a few intrepid buyers, so it was not a total loss. But, I still have lots of nice fabric and need to find homes for it.

I am starting with the batiks by trimming, ironing and folding them. I will sort them into groups and put them in priority mail boxes and put them on my website for sale. I have trimmed off lots of smaller scraps which could be useful to some quilters.

Here are some of the piles of batiks that I have. Some are as large as 1/2 yard and some are smaller than a fat quarter.

After these are boxed and photographed, I will start on the Japanese scraps. I know some of my readers are interested in those.

This is all a bit time consuming, but I think it is the best way to find homes for my stash.

Stay tuned to this space!

I guess it will be what it will be. I sent out messages on my local list serves that if it is snowy for driving, I will have the sale continue on Saturday morning. Isabelle is coming back to help me tomorrow. She was so fantastic at setting things up today.

Back to the Studio Clearance

Lisa gave me this set of fabrics that she designed for Cloud 9 Fabrics. I am going to make a quilt for Paige and one or two of my nieces. It is a wonderful collection to work with.

We made it back to Portland yesterday and after some lunch and unpacking, I was back in the studio, sorting and purging. We had a beautiful day for a drive on Sunday and made it to Grants Pass by 5 pm. We saw this gorgeous sunset as we were driving to our motel. It took my breath away.

Yesterday, we awoke to rain and fog, but as we drove closer to Portland, the sun was coming out. It has been freezing cold and clear. We stopped and bought groceries and a wreath for the front door. I don’t think I am going to do much decorating this year.

So, I finished the cleaning out of my studio and have separated what I want to keep and what I want to sell or donate. Mr C did a great job of cleaning the floors behind me, vacuuming and mopping them. The studio now looks like this.

Every thing has been shoved to one side. Tomorrow, I will start setting up for my studio sale. Steph is coming over in the afternoon to help. On Thursday and Friday, I have a friend who is going to come and help me. If you live in the Portland area, come by between 10 and 4 pm. and check out what I have for sale – lots of goodies, books, fabric, magazines and some of my quilts will be greatly reduced in price. E-mail me for my address.

Next on my agenda is cleaning closets and other areas upstairs. Got to have everything done by January 1.
