Second Breath

Thursday, February 23rd, 2012

This is today’s 3 x 3 – a bit of indigo shibori, machine stitched. Here is yesterday’s –

Robert Genn’s newsletter popped up in my e-mail just a bit ago as I was downloading photos and getting read to write this post. It is titled, “Second Breath”

A “second breath” is a restart of a work after getting a second opinion from yourself. I made up that line while I was walking this morning–so it’s my lead-in to an overdue letter on methods of reworking half-finished or unsatisfactory paintings–and what dangers may be lurking.

You need not consider the time you’ve already wasted, the cloud of your ego, or the riveting need to keep some particular part. This is business and you need to make the business better. You need to ask yourself, “What could be?” Remember the part about not being hung up on keeping something? It’s when you remove that aircraft carrier from the foreground and replace it with an albatross that you start to get somewhere.

I have posted just two of the paragraphs. This was meaningful to me because I took a second breath today. After I printed my blended photos on organza, I was not happy with how they looked on the fabric background that I painted. Truth be told, I didn’t like the background after I started adding more stuff to it.

I want to evoke the feeling of the four seasons in our neighborhood as Scooter, Mr C and I walk it each day. I decided to do a fused patchwork background, using colors that I see in the four seasons. It did not take me as long as I thought to cut and arrange the pieces. I put Mistyfuse on the batting. I will fuse down the pieces and then stich the edges in place. It was too long to photograph the whole piece so here are the sections.

Winter:

Spring:

Summer:

Fall:

This will be a lot more work for me to pull off, but will make for a richer piece. After stitching, I will screenprint the images that I have used to make thermofax screens. Then I will fuse the organza photos.

I have large heavy duty freezer paper sheets that I iron to organza and print in my large Epson 2200.

I spent most of yesterday fighting the printer, cleaning the print heads, adding new ink cartridges. I was still getting horizontal lines when I printed on plain paper. After consulting my expert friend, Gloria Hansen, I found I needed to set the printing for high resolution and it worked perfectly.

Lent started yesterday. I don’t like to give up anything so I am doing something. I am wearing my pedometer and attempting to walk 10,000 steps a day. I set a goal of 8000 for the first week and will work up to 10,000 by next week, I hope.

Chartreuse Reveal

Tuesday, April 12th, 2011

I made 2, well, if you count Klee’s Castles, I made 3 pieces for this challenge. I still have some fused fabrics so there could be more!! This one I call Chartreuse Square in a Square until I come up with something better. Maybe Chartreuse Joy because it is a very happy piece.

Here is a detail.

Here it is in progress. You can see how I drafted the piece on the paper beneath the teflon sheet. I used different sized squares that would fit into a 12 inch square. I fused the piece on the teflon with the drawing as a guide. Then the whole piece is fused to batting. I wanted to use lots of different colors to show how well chartreuse works as a neutral.

This is the second piece which I actually made first.

I named this one All My Exes. It is a riff on a Paul Klee painting.  Here is a detail:

I started by making fused fabric ala Melody Johnson.

Here it is in progress. I had a drawing that I used as a guide for this, but it was not as accurate as the square in a square piece.

Here is the piece fused and partially quilted.

It seemed lacking to me. I thought it needed a focal point and some texture so I added the large Xes and left dangling threads when I stitched them.

I hope you will head over to the Twelve by Twelve blog and see what all my friends have done  with my favorite neutral.

Color Play

Tuesday, March 29th, 2011

I decided I needed a bit more color in my life. These are the trimmings from the silk that I was using today. I am making a second more colorful piece for the chartreuse colorplay. This one will showcase how great a neutral chartreuse can be. It was a tedious fusing process, but I prevailed. It  is ready for quilting tomorrow. I am still mulling over how to quilt the Klee castles. I think I might have to try out the free motion foot on my new Janome. I am thinking of doing an all over spiral design.

I am feeling almost back to normal today. I went to visit the vampire early this morning. So far my blood work results have been very good. I am always happy for that.

Tomorrow is Steph’s birthday. I was hoping to take her out to lunch, but she is doing library duty at M & M’s school. I feel the need to get out of the house and do something social. Maybe I will go shopping for some much needed new walking shoes. My Keen’s are starting to show the wear and tear of daily walking.

My Indigo Moons sold on E-bay for $102.50. I was a bit disappointed. I was hoping to donate more than that. The buyer is a Quilt Art List friend. I am happy that it is going to someone who will appreciate it.

Minor Setback

Monday, March 28th, 2011

Despite being down with a nasty intestinal bug since Saturday night, I managed to finish fusing my Klee Castles. I am quite happy with this. I am not sure how I am going to quilt it so for the time being it stays on the design wall while I think about it.

I have started a third piece with the chartreuse colors. It is sort of like eating potato chips – can’t stop at one.

I took this photograph of an old cherry blossom tree on our walk today. I love the craggy old tree all dressed in pink like an old lady dressed for a tea party.

Hope I am feeling better tomorrow.

Klee Castle Progress

Saturday, March 26th, 2011

I made a bit of progress on the background for my castles. I had several household tasks to accomplish today plus a sinus headache. I finally got down to the studio for a bit this afternoon.

You can see that I have a drawing under the teflon sheet that I am using as a guide, but I do not adhere strictly to it.

I think I have not mentioned that I am a candidate for cataract surgery. I will see the eye doctor next month to get scheduled. I failed the depth of vision test because of the cataracts so I guess it is time to face the music.

Funny story. Someone said I should get my home thoroughly cleaned before the surgery because I would suddenly be able to see cobwebs and dust. I related this story at dinner last night. Mia was very offended by this. She said, “Grandma, you do not have dust and cobwebs. Your house is very clean!”  Mr C and I  enjoyed that remark!

Just heard on the news that we will break the record for number of consecutive days in March with rain. We might break the temperature record, with the average being in the low 40s. We have not had one day at 60° which usually happens several days in March. This too shall pass, and before we know it, we will be complaining about how hot it is!

Hope you are having a great week-end.
