Making a Deadline

Wednesday, May 30th, 2012

I have been working to finish a piece for the SAQA juried show, I’m Not Crazy. It is a piece that I started a while ago. I used de Colourant to create some letters on a hand-dyed background. I wanted to stitch around each letter and found that a special clearview foot that came with my Janome 7700 was perfect for the job. I had much more control than I normally do and was able to free motion quilt around the letters.

This is a piece about depression which has plagued many in my family, including myself. The deadline is tomorrow evening, EST, but I am close to finishing!!

I have 3 more green 3 x 3s. Only one more to go.

I lost this little Aspen leaf thermofax screen, but found it today so was able to do some foiling for this piece.

Mr C gave in and hired someone to work on the landscaping. Today, a delightful young man was here most of the day and cleared out the copious weeds on the side yard where I have the garden beds that are too shady for growing much of anything. It looks so much better. He also worked on the little garden outside my studio.

I took this photo from one of the bedroom windows with the iPhone. Hope he doesn’t mind.

Details

I have been cutting and stitching and quilting the details of my wonky houses. I had hoped to finish today, but I have one more to do. I need to start putting fabrics away — my studio is a gigantic mess, again.

I was so intent on working on these that I almost forgot to do a 3 x 3 for today. So it is very simple – just letting the silk fabric speak.

We awoke to a sprinkling of snow on the roof tops and some on the lawn. Basically, it was a cold, rainy, Oregon winter day. Spring officially starts tomorrow; but we are in for temps in the 40s and rain, rain, rain. OK, enough complaining. We do want to keep Oregon green.

A Quilting Day

Tuesday, March 6th, 2012

Here is a long detail shot of the quilting on this piece. I have spent most of the day doing rather monotonous quilting on this. All the stitching runs horizontally. I am changing colors of thread for each season. I just have fall left to do.

Here is winter with gray thread.

Spring:

And summer:

This piece relies on photos that I have taken of Mr C, Scooter and my neighborhood landscape. Even the screen was created from a photo. Today, on the SAQA list there was much ranting and raving about whether using photos in your work is real art. Since lots of people do it, you can imagine the brouhaha this caused. But, it didn’t bother me. I have put a lot of effort into this. I didn’t just take a photo and print it on fabric. I had a vision for what I wanted this to be and worked with the photos to make that happen. I think it is art.

Working with yellow is not as difficult as I thought it would be. Tonight, I did some needle felting because I didn’t want to rethread the sewing machine.

Commit, Fuse and Stitch

Monday, February 6th, 2012

I am running out of time to get the Metamorphosis piece done. I am leaving on Friday morning to fly to San Francisco with Steph and Mia for a baby shower for Mark and Jayme. The reveal is on Sunday, so there will be no last minute work for me.

Today, I had to stop rearranging fabric and fuse the piece and start stitching. Whew! It felt good to get moving on it. Here is a detail of the stitching. I am doing more precise stitching than I normally do. I am happy this small. I think it will go quickly. It has bating fuzz that I need to remove.

I messed around making today’s 3 x 3. I had to reject the first 2. I ended up with a simple square in a square. Works for today.

Don’t forget to leave a comment on yesterday’s blog for a chance to receive a pretty hot pink scarf . I will do the random drawing on Wednesday morning, PST.

We continue to have sunny days, but they are tempered by the cold west wind blowing out of the gorge. Wreaks havoc on my sinuses, but all in all, I am feeling great.

Sunshine on a Cloudy Day

Sunday, December 18th, 2011

I finished the binding on Gwen’s quilt. I will miss it when I send it off tomorrow. I have enjoyed the sunniness of this as I worked on it. Here is a detail with one of the silly suns that I quilted.

I am so late in getting packages sent. Lisa arrives tomorrow and I hope to get every thing packed up and in the mail and then enjoy the rest of the week with family fun.

Yesterday was Mia’s 12th birthday. I can’t believe that she is a tween, now.

We went out for sushi and then back to Steph’s for cake. Here is Mia blowing out the candles on the ice cream cake.

And here is Miles, enjoying the whole event.

Trinity Cathedral has a pretty big and active outreach program, providing meals to the homeless and low income folks around the church. Each year, they make fancy cookies, box them up and sell them to help fund their work. We bought 3 boxes, one for us, one for our neighbors and one for M & M’s family. Don’t they look tasty?
