She Did It!

seasonspreview

All things being equal, there are things I would have done differently on this, but I am finishing it tomorrow and will get it photographed. The title is ” Taking Leaf of My Seasons.” I struggled with the leaf component. One of the quilts in Quilt National this year consisted of leaves that were scanned and printed and arranged in a composition. In the end, I thought why not!?

I arranged and rearranged the leaves and glued them temporarily on the background and then stitched them and left them lose on the edges so they look as if they are floating.

For the back, I am using the big piece of fabric that I was gifted with in San Antonio. It has my name spelled out. I stitched two long edges of facing tonight. So all I have left to do is the top and bottom facings.

I am still dragging around with this virus. I wake in the morning and think I am ready to roll and as the day goes on, I get tired, achy and cranky. Having the roof work done is not helping. I wanted to crawl in bed and take a nap this afternoon, but they were working right over head and so that was not to be. It is dusty, noisy and I can’t wait for it to be over.

To add to our misery, Mr C’s jeep was broken into last night. We had to leave the cars out on the street because of the new materials and the roofer’s truck in our driveway. They broke a back window and took an old laptop that was with some other old computer stuff that Mr C was taking to the Free Geek recycle center. They no longer make the window that was broken so he had to go to a junk yard to find one and then have it installed. The good news is that it cost less than $100.

I hope that the next time I am back here, things will be looking up around here. I am tired of the plodding.

indigomoonweb

This is the third in my moon series. I have named it Indigo Moon. I did a little bit of hand stitching on this every day for the last two weeks and finally called it done. Here is a detail:

I ran out to Mill Ends to find a backing fabric that was sturdy and found this bark cloth. The combo of the organza and prefelt makes this very light and soft so I needed a backing that would give it some body.

I also finished this piece which is titled, Graffiti. I accomplished my goal of creating something a little more interesting with an edge. I feel I took it from a pretty collage to something that would invite the viewer in to see what is happening.

We have had incessant rain and wind and gloomy weather. It was nice to have my daughter, Lisa, here for a week to bring us some sunshine! She left today. The girl has so much illustration work that she had to keep working while she was here. We had the whole family here for dinner last night. Did some talking about passing on some of our stuff to them when we move. It is good to know what they are interested in and what they don’t give a darn about!

So, I think life is returning to normal, at least for a week or so. I have a big birthday coming up this month. I am ready for it!

Not Much Studio Time

3x3halfdone

I am half way stitching these babies together – only took me six months.

This was probably our last really hot day, and I thought that I would get some dyeing done. However, my job with Surface Design Association took precedence. It is the beginning of the month so lots of state reps like to send their newsletters.

I did make it down tonight after dinner and started working on the sleeves for the Simply Red pieces. We have been asked to make the sleeve in two parts and leave a 3 – 4 inch section in the middle that is open. I will show you why in  a later post.

I got the sleeves stitched to Moonstruck.

Here is a photo of Scooter with my exercise ball. He loves to chase it when I roll it down the hallway.

And last, but not least, I love this beautiful Ginkgo tree that I see in the Rhodie Garden.

Tomorrow, my car is going in for major plastic surgery. It is taking 10 days so I will have a rental car. I have to get up early the car admitted and pick up my temporary wheels.

Heat Wave – Cool Studio

We are having a heat wave. The temps went from the 60’s to the 90’s in about one day. I had a busy day in the studio and on a day like this, I am thankful for my cool basement studio. A bottle of ice water and Scooter kept me company. I finished the under quilt for the pomegranate photo collage. I think it looks pretty good. I like that is a bit different from my other work. You never know what a juror is going to like.

For the moon quilt, I found a piece of linen that is quite substantial for the backing. It needed something a little stiffer than regular fabric. I have used facings to finish the edges – I am almost finished handstitching them.

I will have the three quilts done a day ahead of schedule. I am very happy about that. I don’t have to turn them in for the jurying until the middle of July, but the person doing the dvd for submitting to venues, wants our photo by June 30. I have been so busy for the first 6 months of this year that I was not sure I could make this deadline. Feels good to be finished and to have good work to submit.

I have so enjoyed this week of time to be in my studio and let the creativity flow. I have some new ideas to keep me going for the summer. There are some big deadlines coming up at the end of the summer.

I Shrunk the Moon

moonstruckshrunk

And I like it. Actually, I put it back in the washer and dryer for a second hit. It has great texture.  I am going to crop it in on the rights side and on the top.

Here is a detail:

I went out and bought some beads to jazz it up a bit, but I got carried away. These are coming off and I am starting over or maybe no beads at all.

I really like the beads that I found – the color is perfect and I like the irregularity. I think they are carnelian stones.

Time is passing and I have to get this finished. I have another idea for a red quilt which involves repurposing an old quilt.
