And Then the Lights Went Out

Sunday, August 25th, 2013

sumptuousindigoorganza

I had a fairly productive day yesterday. I took some photos to share and was ready to blog about my progress after dinner. In the middle of dinner prep, the lights went out. This is a rare occurrence. We have lived here for more than 7 years and we have had very few power interrupts. Apparently, a tree was down in the neighborhood. First it was to be back at 9 and then 11. We finally went to bed at 10:30. I think it came back on at 1:30 this morning.

Anyway, I went back to stitching the organza to the wool pre-felt. It has such a luxurious tactility. I just love touching it. This is why I work in textiles.

I think I can finish stitching it today and do the shrinking. The Barnes’ are coming over for pizza so I may not get totally done.

I also made a quick trip to Mill Ends to get some yarn to make a chemo hat for my friend Judy who starts chemo this week for breast cancer. She is so upbeat and positive about this whole experience — she makes me smile when I want to cry about it. I promised her a chartreuse hat and I found this yummy mohair:

But, in the end, she is such a colorful person, I had to go with this:

It is really soft. I think it will look great. I was going to start knitting last night, but that didn’t happen!!

While I was at Mill Ends, I saw this colorful burlap. Have been wondering what I could do with some of this.

Where Was I?

fusingiron

On Wednesday, I came down with a nasty gastroenteritis bug and was not up to doing much of anything until today. I managed to make a delicious Easter dinner and spend some time in the studio. I am so happy with the piece I am currently fusing into place.  I think I can start quilting it tomorrow.

Yesterday was Stephanie’s birthday. She and her family went down to Astoria for a couple of days for some R & R for her birthday. Today, I gave her this gift which I tried to wrap in the best Stephanie manner!! It is a piece of stitched shibori and hemp twine.

I managed to finish quilting (you see where my mind is) knitting the back of Paige’s sweater. Will start on the fronts later tonight. Should be easier now that I have the pattern down.

I was able to get on a pair of pants that I could not wear last year. You are probably wondering why I bought them? They sort of fit when I bought them, but I never wore them because they were just too tight. On a whim, I tried them on today. Voila!

My hope is that in another month, they will be too big – well, maybe, two months.

Hope your week-end was great. We had glorious warm and sunny weather, in the 70’s. We spent some time on the deck and it was such a treat.

Night and Day

xandoparts

Yesterday was one of those days. The weather was atrocious — dark, dreary, cold and persistent rain. I had a lot of work to do sitting at my computer and I got the headache of all headaches — the one I get occasionally. I don’t know what brings them on — a change in air pressure, allergies, stress? I just know that by 7 pm all I wanted to do was go to bed. I gave in for an hour or so and didn’t really sleep. So I got up and watched a couple of episodes of House of Cards with Mr C.

Today? I woke up to delicious sunshine. Headache almost gone. Energy level was back. I had a great day. Like night and day.

I am making progress on making the parts for my big quilt.

I am also making better progress on stitching the 3 x 3s together now that I have a better assortment of beads and thread. I am only on the second row, but this row is moving along much faster.

I only have one sketch tonight. It is of my Bernina. I love it. I think this style of sketching suits me better than trying to be so literal.

I have made some pretty good process on knitting Paige’s sweater. The pattern is so complicated, but I think I have finally got it down.

Just call me the multi-tasking queen!!

Where Is My Groove

leftover3x3s

I have been moving in slow motion, getting caught up on stuff like laundry, paying bills, getting things back in order after a week away. I also had some SDA work to get caught up on. I thought I would come back and feel really  motivated to do some new art because I was dreaming up new work while I was away.

Tonight, I went down and started working on the 3 x3s again. The above photo shows the pieces I have left after I have reached 7 ft in length.

3x3s7ft.

So, I have come up with another scheme for arranging them. I think that if I was more left brained, I would have had this all worked out, instead I proceed more intuitively and end up with trial and error. Stay tuned.

I finally got the pattern for Paige’s new sweater worked out and have finally done several rows without having to start over. It is difficult to see the pattern in this photo, but it is a bit complicated.

Confession – I was too busy to draw while I was away. Well, it was not a priority, should I say. So, here is my first drawing in over a week. I am running out of things to draw or else I am not imaginative enough.

So, I will continue to look for my groove tomorrow.

My Latest Project

Sunday, November 25th, 2012

It has always been a tradition in our family for the Grandma to knit a Christmas Stocking for the grandchildren, for their first Christmas. It has to have their name. My kids still have the ones my mother knit. I knit them for Mia and Miles. I had Mia’s done, except for the name. Stephanie would not tell me the name until she was born — December 17th. I had  a week to knit in the name, Miriam.

I don’t know why I have waited this long to knit one for Paige. I have been looking for just the right pattern and finally found it. I am ding the one on the right and it will say Paige instead of Peace.

I have gotten this far, tonight.

I am ready to knit in her name, but I have to graph it, first.

I am loving these new-fangled yarn bobbins that I purchased when I bought the yarn.

Don’t forget to leave a comment on yesterday’s post if you would like  a chance to win the drawing for the Winter 2013 Art Quilting Studio magazine. It is a huge issue and retails for $15.98 – sort of an art quilt book!

Kathie wondered how I finished the edges on the 3 x3’s. I don’t. I plan to put them all together in an installation of some sort. I might just seal the edges with gel medium.  It has been very rewarding to have this daily practice. I hope to figure out something to do next year.
