Sunny Fun Times with the Bay Area Peeps

This little cutie is the reason we are having our Thanksgiving in the Bay Area. We had an uneventful drive, with a stayover in Yreka on Tuesday night. Mark called to say he had just realized that Paige’s daycare was closed on Wednesday and he wondered if we could come there in the afternoon to help out. Yippee!!

So instead of going to Lisa’s for the afternoon and evening, we went directly to SF and spent some great time with our little granddaughter. We went to a couple of shops to pick up some stuff for dinner that night and the next day and then took her to the park while the cleaning people were at the house.

We had lots of fun. Mark picked up fresh crabs from the Chinese seafood market and prepared them for us for dinner. Jayme arrived just in time, having finished her day in her surgery rotation.

Yesterday, Lisa, Clay and the two of us did some food prep here and then headed back to Mark’s for our Thanksgiving Day meal. Mark did the turkey on the grill and the rest of us took turns in the kitchen preparing different parts of the meal. It was all delicious and it was special to have the time with them and Paige in the middle of it all, hamming it up for our entertainment. Here she is with Poppop, playing her little red piano..

Today, we went back for leftovers, after a nice walk with the girls and Wilfredo. Then we went to Lands End for a hike.

I always love seeing these weathered Cypress trees acting as sentinels at the edge of the bay.

Tonight, the girls took us to the movies to see Philomena. Excellent film. I highly recommend it. Judy Dench is terrific, as usual. It is a very compelling story.

Off to bed. In the morning, Mr C and I are going to the DeYoung to see the David Hockney exhibit. By the way, the weather is beautiful here in the Bay Area.

Time Out for Some Creativity

I took some time out from the sorting and purging for some creative time. I needed to get a print done for the current queen bee of The Printed Fabric Bee. She wanted blue spirals, 8 X 18 inches.

I started with one of my pieces of fabric that was over dyed with indigo. It was basically blue and yellow. I first printed small blueish spirals with a stencil.

Then I mixed up some turquoise Dynaflow paint with this Liquitex iridescent medium. The directions said that a transparent paint works best and that it would be darker before it dried.

I used this large stencil that I made in a workshop with Jane Dunnewold.

One I finished the spiral printing, I thought it was a bit lifeless and needed some red.

And so I got out some red fabric paint and some sequin waste and added some red. Here is a detail shot.

It was fun even though I had to keep running into the storage room to find my printing equipment.

Yesterday, I finally finished the office decluttering. I kept getting sidetracked with meetings – SAQA was here on Wednesday and on Thursday, I had an SDA conference call in the morning and a Trinity Arts meeting for lunch. On Wednesday, we also celebrated Miles 12th birthday. He is wearing his new gray suit, on his birthday list. His mom found the cool hat at a thrift shop. We went out for sushi and then had a birthday mud pie at their home.

Also on his list were a new robe and slippers and some good toffee. We obliged by gifting him with those items. He loved his new robe so much that he got ready for bed early so that he could wear it. I love the rare times I get to spend with my growing grandchildren. I miss the babysitting days.

Here is how my office looks now. I feel as if I am in some strange place.

Today, I started sorting and setting aside fabric for my studio sale on December 6th. I have so much fun folding and fondling fabric. I have worked my way through the fabric that reads as a solid in greens, blues, purples, reds, oranges and yellows. I have sorted out those that have small prints and a pile of marbled fabric.

I hope to get a lot done tomorrow. I am taking a break to get my hair colored in the middle of the day.

Seventy-five , but Who is Counting?

Here is my cake – a delicious gluten and diary free Irish oatmeal spice cake. Steph made little flags out of silk shibori that we dyed together.

It was a nice, uneventful day. We are beginning to get some fall color. Makes our daily walks very enjoyable.

I saw this pile of pumpkins on my shopping trip yesterday.

My present to myslef was a clean-up from the recent creativy and bobbin hunt. I got my Janome back yesterday and this afternoon, I got the pet postcards ready for their backing.

These two are on some deconstructed print fabric.

These are done on whitish fabrics – I think the Scooter motif shows up better.

The yellow and green ones are from a print I did with a masking paper resist on a silk screen. I used green paint on yellow fabric. I am glad I finally found a use for it.

Tonight we had dinner at a Japanese restaurant that specializes in tasty small plates. It was very yummy. Miles dressed very nicely for the event. I love that he likes to get dressed up.

As we left the restaurant, we saw this tree illuminated by red lights from the restaurant and the moon. Awesome sight.

So that was my birthday. We are extending it a few days with a trip to Camp Sherman in the mountains of Central Oregon on the Metolius. We have a cabin for two nights and can take Scooter with us. I will try to post some photos from there.

An Exciting Day

This morning, I found a message on my Face Book page from Vivika DeNegre, editor of Quilting Arts. It had two photos, the one above and this one:

That is my Hugs and Kisses (XXOO) quilt on the cover of the next issue. Way back when, I was asked to send my quilt to Quilting Arts for an article about the new Dinner@8 exhibit, An Exquisite Moment. They would then ship it to California for the Long Beach show.

About a month ago, the phone rang and I saw Vivika’s name in the caller ID and my heart went pitty pat. She called to tell me that the quilt would be on the cover and said some really nice things abut it. But, I couldn’t say anything until now. I am very excited as I have never been a cover girl before!!

The other piece of news is about a new group that I was invited to join, The Printed Fabric Bee. We are going to be a FaceBook group and reveal our projects on our public page.

The Printed Fabric Bee is a collaboration of 10 professional textiles artists printing fabric collections for each other. Each month a member of the group chooses a theme, making her the Queen, and the members of the Hive create a piece of fabric based on her choices. In the end, each member will have a collection of custom made fabric made by all the members of the Hive. Here are the other members and links to their websites.

OK, as if this were not enough excitement, tomorrow afternoon, I am picking up Jane Dunnewold at the airport and get to spend a few days with her. She is giving a lecture at my guild on Wednesday and teaching a workshop on Thursday and Friday. On Thursday night, we have our local SDA meeting with her. She is the current president of the board.

So, if you don’t hear from me for a while, you know why!

Better Results

This photo is a bit dark, but it will have to suffice. I stitched the other indigo blue moon to prefelt today and did some shrinking. I was more careful this time. I started the washer on regular wash with hot water and then stopped the machine and reset it to drain and spin after it had tossed around for about 5 minutes. Then I threw it in the dryer. It has a bit of pilling of the blue prefelt, but is not nearly as felted as the last piece. Here is a detail:

Now, I need to do some hand stitching and get it layered and faced. I also have to decide if I want to try shrinking it a bit more. We shall see.

Yesterday was a bit of a hiatus from studio work. I was doing SDA work, mainly creating some photoshopped artwork for a new Constant Contact newsletter. And, it was our 49th wedding anniversary. It usually falls on Labor Day Week-end, but was later this year. Hear we are, 49 years ago.

I guess we need to do something special next year! Last night we went to one of our favorite restaurants and invited Steph and Jack to join us. We had a great time. It is always more fun to share good food and wine with others.
