Inspired to Design Cover

Elizabeth Barton’s book is almost here!! I have an advance PDF copy of the book so that I can tell you all about it. It is no secret that I have long been an admirer of Elizabeth’s work and  her blog. I used to leave comments on her blog that she should just print all her blog posts in a book and sell it – her blog is that good. Early last year I took an on-line class with her and last fall, she came to Portland and did a lecture and workshop for our guild. It was a treat to have a face to face workshop with her.

I received the pdf of her book this morning and I could not put it down. I read through from cover to cover. She covers seven steps that are important for designing a quilt that is also art. You  start with inspirations and design sketches. She shows you how to start with a photo which can be distilled down to the essence in a sketch — discovering how to crop and find the most interesting part and how to leave the extraneous out. I think that many art quilters put too much into their landscapes and scenes taken from photos. I prefer a more simple abstracted look.

The second step is selecting size, shape and structure. Each section has exercises that are clearly explained and just challenging enough to keep you engaged. The third step is depth and space. This is a topic you don’t see covered in many art quilt how to books. She includes many devices for achieving a 3-dimensional illusion.

The fourth step is that very important element — value. The importance of having a change of value in your work for visual impact can not be overstated. Elizabeth has some great exercises to help. I loved the fifth step chapter on color. Elizabeth covers all the wonders of working with color and how to choose a color scheme.

The sixth step in Elizabeth’s book involves learning how to evaluate your design. Does it convey your main idea? Does it have harmony and unity? And, the seventh step is putting it all together. She covers working from your final sketch, enlarging via the gird method, blocking out the design, fabric selection and some construction methods.

I have only touched on some of the highlights. You can find the book on Amazon and view some of the pages. I would encourage you to do this. You can preorder the book — I think it ships in May.

The best parts of Elizabeth’s book for me are reading her wit and wisdom. This is a woman with a wicked sense of humor and I think it comes through in her writing. The book is also full of her beautiful work. I would want it just to look at her incredible body of work contained in the pages. I wish I had a copy to give away to one of you, but alas, C & T Publishing only sent me a PDF.

On a personal note, I am heading down to California tomorrow with Mr C. I am going to do some shopping for a Mother of the Bride dress on Thursday. On Friday, my daughter-in-law, Jayme, is graduating from Berkeley Medical School with a Master’s Degree in Public Health. She is starting her year of rotations among Bay Area hospitals as an intern and will take the boards in May. We are so proud of her. On Saturday, we will celebrate Paige’s first birthday. I can’t wait to see her and enjoy her happy little personality. It will be a nice family time.

On Wednesday, I came down with a nasty gastroenteritis bug and was not up to doing much of anything until today. I managed to make a delicious Easter dinner and spend some time in the studio. I am so happy with the piece I am currently fusing into place.  I think I can start quilting it tomorrow.

Yesterday was Stephanie’s birthday. She and her family went down to Astoria for a couple of days for some R & R for her birthday. Today, I gave her this gift which I tried to wrap in the best Stephanie manner!! It is a piece of stitched shibori and hemp twine.

I managed to finish quilting (you see where my mind is) knitting the back of Paige’s sweater. Will start on the fronts later tonight. Should be easier now that I have the pattern down.

I was able to get on a pair of pants that I could not wear last year. You are probably wondering why I bought them? They sort of fit when I bought them, but I never wore them because they were just too tight. On a whim, I tried them on today. Voila!

My hope is that in another month, they will be too big – well, maybe, two months.

Hope your week-end was great. We had glorious warm and sunny weather, in the 70’s. We spent some time on the deck and it was such a treat.

A Really Good Thing

wetstudio1

My wet studio or actually, a little kitchenette, where I mix dyes and clean up printing and painting supplies, is now fairly neat and clean. This morning, you could not see the floor. The table was covered with stuff – some from Kerr Grabowski’s workshop from last June.

I did some purging and cleaning of this storage unit – a place I tend to pile stuff to deal with later.

My kitchen sink is white again! Bottles and containers are washed up. My brushes and other print/paint supplies are in containers on the counter.

There is nothing stopping me now – except getting the 3 x 3s put together. I will work on them tomorrow.

Thank you to Del and Linda for giving me some great drawing ideas. I will get back to that tomorrow. I was busy yesterday doing a marathon session of Constant Contact mailings for SDA reps. Jack and Mia and Miles came over for dinner last night. Stephanie was in Maine all week working with her 3191 partner, MAV. She flew home last night.

Tonight we went to the Symphony. It was a jam-packed fabulous and eclectic concert. The guest conductor is from Estonia and he has quite the amusing personality.  So it has been a busy, but lovely two days. I am a happy camper.

It Was A Very Good Year

Happy New Year! Things are winding down here in Congdon land. Paige and her parents tried to leave this morning, but their flight was canceled and they ended up on standby for a flight at 3:15 this afternoon – scheduled flight was 10 am. They are home now, with out luggage, but home. I miss my little mini-me so much. We really had a chance to bond and get to know each other. We will for sure be going to California for her first birthday at the end of March.

This was such a good year for us — I almost hate to see it end. I prevailed at doing a daily art exercise, Paige joined our family, Mr C and I took some great trips and spent some wonderful time with family, I had several quilts juried into shows, the 12  X 12 quilts continued to entertain people, Obama got re-elected, and I got to have my work featured in Art Quilting Studio.

My word for 2012 is Forward, the word that the Obama campaign used. To me, it means continuing the work and the progress I have made this year.

Here is yesterday’s 3 x 3:

This is the complete December collection. I really enjoyed working with yellow-green. I have tons of it in my stash!

And here is the complete year!

My plan is to finish the edges, perhaps by coating them with gel medium, then I will stitch them into a complete installation which will look different than the photo above.

Lisa and Clay are at Stephanie’s tonight, having a movie marathon and eating fun food and sipping bubbly. Mr C and I went to a 5:30 showing of Les Miserables and then came home to a light supper and bubbly. I don’t know if we will make it until midnight. The movie was every thing I had hoped for. I was riveted and did not bring enough tissues. A triumph of the human spirit.

Happy New Year to all of you.

May the road rise up to meet you.
May the wind always be at your back.
May the sun shine warm upon your face,
and rains fall soft upon your fields.
And until we meet again,
May God hold you in the palm of His hand.

I am coming to you from The Congdon Infirmary and Day Care. Jayme is quite sick with a head cold and cough. Mark is doing a little better. Neither of them is getting enough sleep. Paige, on the other hand, is having a good old time, keeping us and the dogs on our toes.

Tonight, she was in rare form, and was not ready to sleep at her normal bedtime.

Mr C and Mark took turns walking her around, and she finally got sleepy.

I keep running out of food. I am not used to feeding so many folks. I made a huge pot of soup tonight and it was gone. Clay helped me make vegan apple crisp. Just means that you use vegan margarine instead of butter.

I thought I would share some of my great Christmas presents. This is a lovely little hanging of Chinese zodiac animals with wonderful embroidery on them. My sister-in-law, Ann, got them when she was in China last spring.

I collect ethnic and folk art crosses. Steve’s brother and wife gave me this one. It is Haitian — made from a steel drum and then painted. It is really wonderful.

Lisa gifted me with some great fabric. Indigo cotton from some friends in Oakland who dye and sell fabric.

She also gifted me with a set of fat quarters of Jay McCarroll’s design. He was the first Project Runway winner who designs fabrics as a sideline. I am in love with the colors and patterns in these.

This is my favorite because I think I would love to make a quilt that looks like this.

She also gave me this lovely striped and very soft wool stole/wrap. Love the colors.

Stephanie and family gave a beautiful woven stole. I love the colors in this too. I guess I will be staying warm and stylish this winter.

Scooter is a little bit jealous of the time I spend with Paige. Sometimes, he just comes and sits by us and stares with those eyes you can’t see!! Then he will come up and try to put his head on my lap next to her. She loves him and loves to grab his fur and ears and tail. Overall, he is very gentle with her.

Here is today’s 3 x 3.

Only two more to go. Then what? I have some ideas, but have not settled on one thing yet. Sometimes, I think I should give the daily thing a rest for a year.
