Sunshine and Quilts

Friday, April 8th, 2011

Sunshine and blue skies and an afternoon at a quilt show — could the day be any better? As Terry and I drove north and over the Columbia to Vancouver, there was not a cloud in the sky. We definitely needed our shades.

The women of the Clark County Quilters treated us royally, a delicious lunch and a prime spot to sign our books and show our colorplay quilts. Here is Terry:

That beautiful large poster was provided by Lark — very impressive.

The quilt show chair, Vonda, who is a little dynamo, gifted us with a cute brooch which she created with the help of Elinor Peace Bailey. Every vendor received one.

I bought the beautiful roving up there in the first photo. I think my next Twelve by Twelve quilt will be felted with these beauties.

The sun was still shining when we went out to dinner at 6:30 tonight. Imagine that, I needed sunglasses all day long.

PIQF Report

Thursday, October 14th, 2010

As we were driving away from my son’s hood, I took a photo of this cool mural across the street. He lives in the Mission and many residents are of Mexican heritage. When I walk around the neighborhood, I know what it is like to not look like most people you encounter. I never am afraid. I love the whole scene.

I met Liz Berg at the Pacific International Quilt show between 10:30 and 11. Mr C was coming back at 3 so I didn’t have a lot of time to see the amazing array of quilts.

I bought some beautiful hand-dyed silk/cotton from my friends from Sonoma County (no website – I learned to dye from Judy and Carlene). I learned to dye from them. I also bought some of Judy Robertson’s lovely fabric. I also bought a couple of garments from Ananse Village

Here are some quilts that caught my eye, that I remembered to photograph.

I always love Noriko Endo’s quilts. She creates the landscape with small bits of fabric then it is covered with tulle and machine quilted. She gets a very organic and realistic landscape.

Loved the colors and geometry of this. The intersecting lines look trapuntoed.

This is a Carol Taylor quilt. That is Liz looking at it. We thought this seemed like a new direction for her. I really liked it.

I know Betty Busby through FaceBook. She does wonderful scenes of the natural world. It was great to see one of her quilts up close and personal.

Of course I loved this quilt  by Patti Morris from Canbadawhich is another take on Aspens in the fall. A really nice composition.

You need to click on this to see it better. It is the Russian River done by the art quilt group that I started in Santa Rosa, The Pointless Sisters. It makes me so happy to see that they are still going strong. This was designed by Linda Morand and each member did a section with the rivers connecting.

I forgot to take photos of the High Fiber Diet show. I was having too much fun running into old friends and catching up.

Tonight, Mr C and I walked to a nearby Italian restaurant for dinner. Mark and Jayme were invited to the home of one of her professors at Berkeley, where she is in an elite program with only 16 students. Half the class was invited tonight.

I am very tired. Time to call it a day!!

Artists Among Us Show Prep

Tuesday, May 4th, 2010

Today, Mr C and I went to Trinity to hang my quilts and set up my area. This is the view as you enter the hall. You can see my quilt, Urban Sunlight, which is the poster child for the show, straight ahead.

The rest of the show is in the midst of being hung and arranged.  Here are some overview shots.

On the right you can see a gigantic sculpture that a guy brought in and assembled. The show coordinator was a bit amazed at the size of it.

Here are some overview shots of my space.

Here are some closeups.

There is some really excellent work in this show. I am proud to be part of it.

Dinner at Eight Artists presents Beneath the Surface, a special exhibit at the International Quilt Festival in Long Beach, CA  – July 22-25th at the Long Beach Convention Center.  Sponsored by Moore’s Sewing Centers and Brother International and the Dinner at Eight blog.

I can finally show you Mother Lode, which was accepted into this special exhibit along with many excellent art quilters across the country. I think a trip to Long Beach and IQF is in order.

Here is a detail:

Getting Back in the Groove

greenflashfull

It was good to get back in the studio to do some work today. I got the green flash piece constructed and fused to the batting. This is just the bare bones. The stitching and mica painting will make add to the design and complexity, I think. I found this great fabric in my stash for the back.

I decided that my cruddy feeling yesterday was caused by my seasonal allergies returning with a vengeance. It was very windy and dusty yesterday. I started my ritual of saline rinses and sudafed and felt somewhat better.

Mr C is having his surgery early tomorrow morning. We  have to leave the house around 5:30 am. Steph is going to come over and walk Scooter, who seems to have some kind of tummy problem going on. I hope it is not serious. We have been giving him some new food for the training exercises. I think that it is not agreeing with him. Just one more thing to worry about.

If you live near Scranton, PA, you might want to check out this show. I have a piece in it. The show opens September 25th.

I keep forgetting that I need to get my 12 X 12 piece done by next Wednesday. I  know what I am going to do and it is going to be fun, but i wanted to get the green flash further along.

I am not sure that I will be checking in tomorrow. Mr C is staying in hospital over night and I will probably hang out with him unless Scooter needs  me.
