Heading West

Tuesday, April 21st, 2009

STASH is off to the beach tomorrow for our annual April retreat. We are staying for a couple of nights and coming home on Friday. I am so up for some R & R that I am not even packing that much sewing to do. I will continue cutting the fabrics for my 12 X 12 piece. There is no Internet access at the beach house so I will be off line — hope I don’t go into withdrawal!! I am taking my computer, just in case I might pick up a wifi signal some place in the hood. The weather will be in the 50’s and partly sunny — I will be happy with that.

This is a photo of the guild showcase at the Contemporary Craft Museum. Guilds who are members of the museum get to showcase work at the museum. The Columbia Fiberarts Guild has work there through the end of May. That is my Indigo Moons hanging on the right.

Another Opening, Another Show

Not Philadelphia or Buffalo, but Roseburg, Oregon. A smallish city between Ashland and Eugene, Oregon. Out Line Dancing show with a horizontal lime green line in each piece is now hung at the Umpqua Valley Art Association. See more photos on my Flickr Set about the show.

It looks really great! My Indigo Construction piece is on a smoked glass room divider as you walk in. It really looked fabulous.

Here are two more of Terry’ pieces.

Even the food was lime green dancing inspired. All of the staff wore lime green. They were really into it!!

One of the galleries had a fabulous basket show. When my quilts come home, this one is coming home with them. And, of course, it has lime green lines.

There were nine of us at the reception and 4 husbands. We had a good time.

Quilts!!

Thursday, February 19th, 2009

At this rate, I am going to need a vacation from my vacation. Yesterday was a very full day. We drove to Oceanside and San Diego to see the Quilt Visions 2008 show and the show at the Quilt Visions Gallery. Today, we spent the better part of the day at the Twentynine Palms Marine Base. More on that later. I was able to turn the tour into an artistic adventure!!

Where to start about the quilts I saw yesterday! Here is a photo of the Oceanside Art Museum where the Quilt Visions show is hanging. You can see that it was a beautiful day.

Some of the quilts were very familiar. I knew the maker before I looked at the card: Jette Clover, Linda Colsh, Katie Pasquini Masopust, Valerie Goodwin, Joan Schulze and Regina Benson. Sorry, no photography!!

Of the 41 quilts, my favorites were by Shulamit Liss, from Israel — Almost Summer, Patty Hawkins from Colorado — Aspen Solace and Karin Franzen from Alaska — Pirouette 4. I think I liked these because the way the fabric was used to create layers and complexity. I could not find  a link to Shulamit’s piece and she does not have a website. Patty has a website, but I could not find the Vision’s quilt!! It looks as if she used indigo shibori for the trees which I have done and I had not seen it in her work before. I have been a fan of her work for a long time. Karin has a website and a photo of her Visions quilt so finally, I can show you a quilt that I loved. She used silk organza, used cothing and a variety of other fabrics with discharge, syeing, silk screening, paint and oil pastels. It was raw edge appliqued.

We had lunch at the marina in Oceanside – fish tacos!! Then we drove down to San Diego to the new Quilt Visions Gallery which is located in a beautiful old building that used to be part of the Naval Training Center. Many of these old buildings are being repurposed for arts organizations and other non-profits. These photos are clickable to see larger.

Again, no photography. Ann, who is an artist and architect, liked the show at the gallery even better than the QV 2008 show. I agree because it was the work of the jurors from the past few vision’s show. The work was done by mature and accomplished artists — Personal Visions, Past Quilt Visions Jurors Exhibition. My favorites were by Jane Dunnewold and Mary Ann Jordan. Mary Ann does not have a website. Her work was very large with bold designs created with paint and perhaps dye. In her artist statement, she says that she loves to take a piece of fabric with paint drips and splotches that might have been rejected and turn it into a beautiful quilt. I so relate to that!! Jane’s work was, of course, gorgeous complex cloth.

Another interesting exhibit had a quilt from each of the previous QV shows. It was so mind blowing to see the transition from a very traditional appliqued quilt to a very abstract whole cloth quilt created from a piece of gorgeous dyed fabric on which the stitching formed wonderful elements from the dyed designs

Our final stop was Old Town San Diego where Ann needed to get some supplies for her new passion, wire wrapped jewelry. She is starting with copper because silver is more pricey. I snapped these photos while she was shopping.

And I have to show you the greast checkered water tower that I photographed on the drive home.

Home from Seattle

Sunday, August 10th, 2008

I am back home, sitting on the sofa with Lisa, who arrived from SF this morning and spent the day with Mia. She is ripping quilting stitches from a baby quilt and tomorrow, I am going to give her a lesson in machine quilting. I will post photos!

We made one last trek to the APNQ show, had lunch at a street creperie and then took the bus home. I took new photos of some of my favorite quilts and mine, too. Here is a better shot oh how mine looked.

Look at this wonderful quilt done by Terry’s sister-in-law, from the pattern, Delft Tiles. She used a variety of black and white prints. She won third place in applique.

Detail:

This beautiful applique quilt was done by friend, Virginia O’Donnell from Portland. It is title Little Brown Birds.

These two quilts were my favorites. The first is titled Warmth and was made by a Japanese woman as part of an exchange.

And this silk, with wonderful beading, which won and honorable mention. It is by Patricia Goffette.

Here are my crepes being prepared.

Mmm, good. Tomorrow, I will share my favorite purchases from the vendors.

APNQ, Seattle

Saturday, August 9th, 2008

The APNQ show was here for the first time this year. It was a great venue and the show looked great – the quality of the work was wonderful and the number of art quilts was pretty large.

Here is my official name tag for being a finalist.

I have some very blurry photos of quilts. I think I had my camera on the wrong setting. So I will have to reshoot my faves tomorrow. Here is my quilt hanging in the show. I entered in the new art quilt division, hoping that my quilt would hang with other smallish quilts, but no, it is next to gigantic sunflowers.

Here is Terry with her quilt. She got to hang next to the cows from Sonoma County.

I love, love the architecture of Seattle. Some of you may remember that I did my journal quilt about Seattle architecture last year. Here are some shots from the Convention Center, which has wonderful windows, even in the ceiling.

I captured two different planes flying overhead.

This is how I amuse myself when I am sitting and waiting.

Linda and I at lunch. I was showing her how I can flip the viewer on my camera and take a self-portrait.

Teyy’s sister, Becky, took the ferry over from Port Orchard and spent some time with us. Here they are leaving the show for the day. (Hi, Beck!!)

I got some great stuff today, but I haven’t photographed it yet. We went out for dinner at a Greek restaurant where the service was very slow. But the company was great. Terry’s sister-in-law, from Montana, was here with her business partner selling hand dyed wool and ribbon and yummy embellishments. They had dinner with us tonight and I really enjoyed chatting with Jamie, who won a third place on her applique quilt.

I was so happy to get in my Jammie’s tonight. It is grueling doing a quilt show.
