In Seattle, No Quilts, Yet

Friday, August 8th, 2008

We had a lovely train ride from Portland to Seattle and a wild taxi ride from the station to our hotel where we met up with Gale and her sister from Las Vegas. Here are Linda and Terry on the train.

We made our way to the waterfront for dinner. I had a smoked halibut dinner and a Sam Adams. We sat at picnic tables and enjoyed the lovely Seattle evening.

Here are some sights from our evening. You can see them all at my Seattle APNQ Flickr site.

Terry and I are enjoying the Olympic Opening Ceremonies. Tomorrow, there will be quilt content.

A Productive Day

Thursday, August 7th, 2008

Some days, I get energized and I seem to be able to accomplish more than I think I can. It helps to have deadlines. Lisa is coming on Sunday and so I needed to revert the temporary dressing room/closet back to a guest room. Mr C got all the fixtures hung in my closet, but, Sergei was busy painting all day so I couldn’t get to the closet. I got enough done tonight to make me feel that we can be ready. Here is a peek at part of the closet before I messed it up with my stuff.

The problem is, I won’t be home from Seattle until after she arrives. Terry, Linda and I (part of STASH) are taking the train tomorrow to attend the APNQ show at the convention center. I am looking forward to lots of laughs and critiquing of quilts. The show only happens every two years so it is a big deal. The show is juried and the work is usually top notch. Not to mention all the vendors who will be there. I’ll take my computer and hope to blog about it.

Speaking of Lisa, she was invited to submit a piece of art for a show at the Democratic National Convention. The theme is Manifest Hope. You can see her beautiful piece here. Needless to say, I am very proud.

Thanks for the nice comments about my rust dyed shibori scarf. I decided that the scarf needs another layer of rust. I went through the basement storage area and Mr C’s workbench, looking for rusty things. I have the scarf in a plastic bin with a bunch of metal stuff, some vinegar water and bottles to hold every thing down, after I covered it with plastic. This is what it looked like before I covered it.

I will just leave it out on the patio while I am away and let the water and resulting rust do it’s magic.

My other accomplishment was to finish cleaning and organizing my desk and cleaning up the studio. Mr C is going to wash the floors while I am gone. I know, I am a very lucky lady!! I also mastered editing a new area of the SDA website today — they love to keep me busy.

Accomplishments

Sometimes, I get to the end of a day, and I think I have not accomplished much of anything. I try to think back over the day — what did I do? Today, was one of those days. After breakfast, coffee, the newspaper and some blog reading, I prepared Indigo Construction for the trip to the APNQ show. I had a sleeve, but not the legal type of label. Once the label was done, I had to cover it with muslin for the judging – ugh – I don’t like to have my work picked apart by judges. I then prepared it for the FedEx shipping tube, printed out the shipping label and Mr C took it off to the shipping store.

I also washed all my silk fabric and hung it to air dry. This is all going to Coupeville with me. There is organza, habotai, charmeuse, peau de soie and noil. I also have some charmeuse and chiffon scarves.

After a nice walk with Maggie and lunch, I worked a bit on my Illumination challenge for the 12 X 12 group. Here is a sneak peak.

Then it was off to do some shopping for supplies for the trip and some bread and peaches for family dinner tonight. M & M were at day camp this week and I missed my day with them. They had a wonderful time in the great out-of -doors. They didn’t want it to end. He had wild berry juice on his cheeks. I wanted to photograph him. This is what I got:

We had a nice dinner of grilled chicken (marinated in zin, olive oil, dijon mustard, garlic and thyme), roasted new potatoes, grilled zucchini, caprese salad with heirlooms tomatoes, bread and ice cream with peaches and balsamic syrup. There was a nice bottle of Alderbrook zin as an accompaniment.

Now, we are watching Sweeney Todd — a bloody good movie! I love the music, anyway. I can watch Johnny Depp do just about anything. Speaking of movies, we saw Wall-E the other night and loved it.

So, I guess that I did accomplish some things today. I leave you with the lovely table of Mediterranean barley salad that Terry served us yesterday at the STASH meeting. Delicious.

Not Finished, Yet!

Monday, June 23rd, 2008

(Forgot to mention that my Indigo Construction quilt was juried into APNQ, which will be held in August!!)

I have taken your comments to heart and I really appreciate all the comments you have shared with me.

I found this piece of hand-dyed fabric in my stash. I think this will complement the Construction piece, with a little help. I dribbled black paint with a syringe. I love how this looks:

Before I painted this larger piece, I did a small sample to see how it looks. I think this might work for another layer and a focal point on the Construction piece.

For Kristin, I threw on some thin mustard strips for good measure. I do like adding that bit of color — not sure where or how they will end up. I didn’t even know that I had a nice big piece of mustard yellow hand-dyed fabric!!

I hope to get some time to work on this tonight. M & M are coming to spend the night, and tomorrow, we are taking them to the Evergreen Aviation Museum near McMinnville. Mr C really wants to see the Spruce Goose, which is housed there.

My week is getting away from me. I start a class with Jeannette DeNicolis Meyer on Thursday, Working with Liquid Resists and Thickened Dyes — Woo Hoo! It is at the Oregon College of Arts & Crafts for 4 days.

The dry-wall guy is finishing today. I had to get paint selected for the bathroom as they will do a coat of paint before the tile is installed. Yesterday, we went to IKEA and the Container Store to check out fittings for my new closet. We decided to go with the Elfa System, although, IKEA has some really cool accessories.

Good 2 B Green Show

Sunday, March 9th, 2008

I am so tired. Between all the family stuff and the trip to the coast to see the “It’s Good to be Green” show, I am done in. Then, there was the time change.

I arrived at the Latimer Quilt & Textile Center and found Terry and Larkin and the rest room (it is about a 2 hour drive). Terry did her video interview first. Then, it was my time. The videographer told me that I am a natural in front of the camera. I did find it easier than I expected, to talk about my piece and how I did it. June arrived soon after and got her 15 minutes of fame – oh it wasn’t that long!!

Here is a group of us waiting for the videographer to finish so that we can see the show. Left to right: Larkin, moi, Jan Beale, Terry, Arlene. Jan and Arlene are from Whidbey Island, where Larkin lives.

Here are the Portland Green spouses waiting in the hall. That is June with them. Hmm – lots of enthusiasm there.

Finally, the show. It looked really great. The 18 inches by 45 inches made for a cohesive show, even though the work was very diverse.

Mine didn’t play well with the other pieces so it was hung on the door to the exhibit hall, welcoming one and all.

Here are some shots of the show. As artists, we were allowed to take photos today. I have tried to give an overview of the show.

In the shot above, you can see a TV. That is where the artist interviews will play throughout the run of the show.

And, finally, here is Larkin with the Portland troika. Don’t we look so artsy?

If I missed getting a shot of your quilt, I am sorry. I just wanted to give a flavor of how the show was hung. It really did look beautiful.
