This and That

Sunday, July 11th, 2010

I had a very eclectic day and one of the most fun things that I did was making this little felted composition. I used the painted organza trimmings left from the sunset piece with roving.

I also did some fabric painting out on the patio. It was so nice to work outside and not worry about a mess in the studio. I had to paint more red and black silk organza because the synthetic was not working for me. I also touched up the silk background that I have for making another aspen piece.

In the morning, Scooter and I took an hour walk. It was beautiful here today – got up to 81° and was delightful.

I got the oven going tonight and made a pizza margharita for dinner and a pan of apricot oatmeal bars for my guild board meeting tomorrow morning. Yummy!

Now, I need to put a warm compress on my eye with a stye. Is there no end to the annoyances in my life!!

No Rain = Happy Day

Tuesday, June 8th, 2010

We had no rain today! It was raining tonight when I left my meeting at Trinity, but I was so energized and productive all day long. I started the day with a phone call with the Interim Executive Director for SDA – mainly talking website issues.

I painted some more fabric and hung it out to dry before I took Scooter for his morning walk.  After lunch I worked on the studio once again. It is just about ready for cleaning the paint and dye splattered floor. I try to do a good cleaning of the floor about twice a year. I am a messy artist, and I do not want to muddle up my studio time worrying about paint on the floor!!

Tonight, I received delivery of a print that I fell in love with at the Artist’s Among Us show last month. It is titled Midwinter Moon Mystery and is by Dorothy Freudenberg who lives in Bend.

This is a description of how she works.

Dorothy is a photographer who has left the confines of traditional photography and embraced the new digital technologies, producing works that are in a sense, multi-media. By combining photography with the capabilities of a digital darkroom, working in programs that allow her to build multi-layered pieces, she transforms her factual photography renditions into expressions of internal emotional conditions, with brilliantly-colored, painterly qualities. Years of study in black and white photography have expanded into a new art form, whose tools leave room for a limitless range of possibilities, challenging her to continually engage in experimenting and expanding her expressive capabilities.

It won viewer’s choice at the show. I really love it.

I didn’t get to do a fiber sketch today – maybe not tomorrow. I have Guild meeting tomorrow night and I need to be there at 6 pm.

Joy

Sunday, June 6th, 2010

Yesterday, I had to take a day off because I was still feeling like a truck drove over me. It was our first sunny day since I can’t remember. Scooter was not feeling so well either. Maybe he was having sympathy pains.

Today, we are both back in action! My fiber sketch for today is called joy and represents how I felt after a couple of days of a nasty virus.

I had to pick up some new gallery canvases at the art store today. I also bought some Dynaflow paint in the colors of the next Twelve by Twelve challenge — purple and yellow.

I am planning to paint some silk organza for the challenge. I just had to give it a whirl tonight.

Gaaa! I love it. I love the color you get when the purple and yellow are mixed.

Here is the cotton that I had under the organza.

M & M and their parents took off on Friday after school and got in two nights and a day of camping before the rain came pouring down this morning. I loved the photos that she shared on the 3191 blog, but especially this one.

Tomorrow, I am going to try to get my studio cleaned up. I might have company at the end of the week.

Feeling Groovy

Thursday, May 13th, 2010

Yesterday, I recovered from what ever was ailing me and I was able to get all my housework done. I went to the market and picked up some special provisions for the visiting vegans. I made some bodacious hummus. Life is good when you are feeling healthy!!

This morning, Lisa and Clay took off with my car to do some shopping and to hang out with Steph and pick the kids up from school. I got down to the studio and started wrangling the big quilt with the painted background. My first quilting attempt, in a vertical direction, just didn’t work. So I ripped that out. This time, I quilted horizontally. I think that I might have done something a little more organic, but this piece is so big and heavy, this seemed like the best solution. Here is a detail:

I am making dinner for the girls and two of their artist friends who live in Portland. M & M and their parents will come also. The weather is great. We can sit on the deck. I love it. I love the light as the day is ending in the summer time.

If I am lucky, I might have time to start adding the trees and leaves tomorrow!

Aspen Progress

Friday, May 7th, 2010

This is silk shantung organza that I have splattered and dribbled with paint. I usually fuse the organza to another layer of plain organza. But for this larger landscape, I think I may fuse it to muslin or white cotton to give a more opaque look.

Here is a detail:

I hope that I didn’t overdo the paint, but usually when I cut a strip and then stitch it, it magically becomes a tree.

I pulled out several yellows and yellow-greens which I fused for making aspen leaves.

I have leaf shapes printed on freezer paper which will be used as templates for cutting leaves. I have several sizes and shapes.

I would love to go down to my studio and prep some fabric and start cutting. However, we have been out at the opening reception for Artists Among Us. The food was fabulous. I think there were more than 200 people there. Most were the artists and their friends. Not a lot of shopping tonight, but I did sell one scarf. The big shopping day is Sunday, but I think we will get quite a few shoppers tomorrow.

I received many nice compliments on my work. And lots of how do you do that and how long does it take you and is that hand appliqued – (ha ha ha ha)! One lovely young woman, daughter of a member of the parish, came all the way from Walla Walla, just to meet me and see my work. She is a budding art quilter. So lovely to talk to her. Actually, I got most of my thumbs up from the younger people.

Tomorrow morning, we are celebrating Mom’s Day with Steph and family. We are going out to brunch since I need to be at the show on Sunday. We have had a sense that warmer weather is on the way. It was sunny most of today. That is making me happy. I am going to start planting the gardens. I hope we had our last freeze last night.

This was also the opening of the Bird’s Eye View show. I was sorry to miss that. I hope to get out there next week to see it.
