Art Every Day 19

choreographed1

I did not have a good day today – had sort of a relapse with a really bad sinus headache and lethargy. Didn’t do much all day except veg and do some grocery shopping. After dinner (maybe it was the wine), I began to feel better.  I went down to the studio, wanting to do something. I was going to do another Expressive Drawing when I remembered something else I wanted to try.

Jason Pollen, who is the recent past president of the Surface Design Association board, in his last letter from the president gave an assignment titled, Create Two Choreographed Collages. Here are his instructions:

Materials
• 2 8-inch squares of light colored fabric
• A few small cloth fragments from your scraps
• 2 spools of contrasting colored thread for hand or machine sewing (spool and bobbin)
• A small quantity of white and black paint (acrylic or latex)
• A smallish brush
• Water and a small container for mixing the paint

Procedure
1. Sit quietly and contemplate the square of fabric and then hand- or machine-stitch two rows from edge to edge. They may or may not cross. The stitched lines may or may not be straight or sinewy.
2. Stitch two or more (not many) of your fabric bits onto this square so that they have some affinity for one another and hum in the space you have given them to dance.
3. Wet the background areas with your brush and water.
4. Paint onto this wet fabric (the background) with the tip of your brush dipped in white or black. Take your time with this and watch how the watery paint responds to capillary action.
5. Now create a second eight-inch square and proceed the same way as before. This time use the paint color you did not use in the first piece. Contrast the mood and atmosphere with the first piece.
6. Iron the pieces when dry.

This exercise is designed to make you smile.

Above, is one of my stitched pieces and here is the other.

Here they are with paint. I did not have time for them to dry and be ironed. Had to watch Project Runway.

My paint did not really spread on the wet fabric like I expected. Maybe it was the fabric. I love the white painted piece. I am smiling just because I feel better.

I am hoping that I am at the end of whatever has been ailing me. Tomorrow, we will celebrate Milo’s 8th birthday and on Sunday, I am taking M & M to see Rumpelstiltskin performed by puppets. I also hope to get to the art show to benefit the Portland Audubon Society, on Saturday. I have a little piece in the auction.

Rainbow Fish School

Rainbowschool

At least that is my name for it. I should have made a new fish screen, but c’est la vie.

Part of this challenge was to do some subtle dimension. I put an extra layer of batting under 3 of the fish and stitched it with water soluble thread.

Then I added the batting and backing and quilted it. A light sponging with water removed the trapunto sponges. It is very subtle, hardly noticeable.

I did some more playing around with printing on silk and adding the Colorhue dyes after the paint had dried. I want to make a scarf for an auction to help a young woman with breast cancer who has no health insurance. She is a friend of Clay, Lisa’s partner. When will this madness end. Health care should be a right not a privilege.

I ended up having to  call the Dr’s office today. I have been having pain in my upper abdomen. I  took ibuprofen for a week for the tooth ache and now I have gastric  inflammation so I am on a med to decrease the acid in my stomach so that it can heal. If it’s not one thing it’s another!

fishbubblewrapdyeing

I had a hectic few days. I hosted the Oregon Fiberarts Critique Group on Saturday so there was the frenetic getting ready and providing coffee and treats when every one arrived on Saturday morning. Our guest critic, Alice, was our cathedral arts director until we ran out of funding for the position. She did a great job. I got a good kick in the butt. First of all, the only work I had was really safe work that I had done for the Twelve X Twelve group and them SDA member’s show.

Her biggest advice to me was to kick it up a notch and not be so safe. I had already begun to think about this. I really have had a problem getting something going in the studio so I think I just need to do the work and spend more time with perfecting some techniques. I need to go back to where I was before I did my solo show which took me off track.

Enough soul searching.

Right now, I am having fun whipping up a piece for the Fast Friday Fabric Challenge. The theme is an animal. I don’t really do animals. The most abstract one I could think of was a fish. I wanted to try a new technique with the Colorhue dyes which involves printing with Lumiere paints and then applying the dye. The pain acts as a resist.

For the background, I chose a lime green silk from my stash. I shose some paints from my collection.

I then screen printed with a thermofax screen that I had made last year.

They were a little more purple than I wanted, but looked iridescent which was good.

Here is the fun part. You lay the silk on bubble wrap. Then paint it with water; that makes the silk adhere to the bubble wrap. Then I painted with 3 or 4 colors of the  Colorhue dyes. the result is what you see at the top of my post. It is still wet and needs to dry on the bubble wrap. I think I should have used the smaller bubble wrap, but it is still very fun.

I have to go finish getting our supper ready. We have to eat early and go to theology class tonight. I have a very wonderfully smelling slow cooker soup going. Chicken, black beans, corn, salsa, mushrooms, cumin. I am going to garnish it with sour cream and avocados.

Climbing Out of a Black Hole

copperblackhole

I have been in a big funk, feeling sorry for myself and mad at myself for some dumb things that I have done over the past few weeks. I am going to chalk it up to too much emotional baggage. I  screwed up the last major piece that I made. I think I can fix it, but it will take some work. I screwed up an entry into an exhibition which disqualified me. That is only the half of it.

Anyway, today is a new day. I am climbing out of that black hole and making one instead. I joined the Fast Friday Fabric Challenge group. The latest challenge was outer space using some different materials and embellishment. I will be late posting, but I am determined to get something new done. I decided to do a black hole.

The photo above was painted with metallic paints. I used a circle of freezer paper to create the hole. After it was dry, I over-painted with transparent black Setacolor paint.

Next, I will do some stitching and embellishing to create a deep space scene.

Tomorrow, I am hosting my first Columbia FiberArts Guild board meeting. I have the agenda and handouts printed. I made pumpkin bread to serve with coffee and tea. After some final  cleanup in the morning, I think I am ready.

This and That

micachips

Just a quick check in. I think the activities of the past two weeks have caught up with me. I hope I do not have the flu because Mr C has surgery on Thursday and he needs me. So, I am off to bed soon.

The photo above is my experiment with tinting mica chips for the green flash piece. The photo is not that great because every thing is reflective, but you get the idea.

Today, I had fun helping one of Jane Dunnewold’s Mastery students make thermofax screens for her next project. Barbara recently moved back  here to Portland. She used to have her own clothing design business, but now designs fabric for other designers. The Mastery program is a 3 year program with twice a year week long classes in San Antonio with Jane.

On Sunday night, Mr C and I took Scooter to his first puppy training class. He is doing so well. We have homework every day, and he is a very smart boy. He can come, stay, sit and go down on command. (As long as a treat is involved!!) Here he is n class, touching Mr C’s hand to get a treat.

I am done for the night. Ta!!
