This and That

newartsupplies

I am feeling so much better after a rejuvenating sleep last night. This morning, my iPhone alarm went off to remind me that I had a teeth cleaning appointment at 10 am. I got there to find out it was at 2 pm! So, I decided to visit a couple of art stores in my quest to find mica chips for my green flash. The two I visited in the morning did not have what I wanted. After my 2 pm appointment, I stopped at two more stores. The first was having a side walk sale so I picked up some pencils, erasers and small journals, but no mica chips. I did get the green screen printing ink and some Golden black mica flakes.

Off to Art Media. I bought some pearl mica chips which I am going to tint with one of the greens that I bought. I also bought some spring green pearlescent powder. Laura uses pallet knives to stain fabric with paint so I bought a couple of those.

Speaking of supplies – Got Glue? I do. This was leftover from the workshop so I bought it.

Can you tell that I am excited to get back to work in the studio?

I also bought some handmade paper as a possible background for one of the fusion pieces I did in the workshop. I had an aspen screen print on organza that I had used as the bottom layer.

I liked both sides of the fusion piece so I decided to slice it up and alternate the sides. Needs some work.

We had co-presidents of the guild last year and each of them made the board members lovely gifts. Karen, a weaver, gave us these bookmarks which she purchased in Sweden.

And Carla, a quilter, made each of us a quilted heart. I love the fabrics in this.

Tomorrow, Jayme arrives to participate in the celebration preparations. Can’t wait to have her here with us. I feel so blessed to have her as my son’s life partner and a member of our family.

I leave you with a photo of a pooped puppy. Mark and he went over to Reed college and found another puppy to play with.

My 1000th Blog Post

newaspentrees

Woo hoo! I thought I wasn’t going to be able to post tonight, but my site is back on line so here we go with blog post 1000. There will be prizes!!

I thought it would be fun to go back and look at my first post. Here is what it said:

This is my first blog so please be kind. I enjoy reading the blogs of family, friends and perfect strangers so I thought I would jump into the fray. As my Blog title says, I am crazy for fiber. I make fiber art and I’ve been knitting forever. I hope to share my works in progress – both blunders and successes. Once I figure this out, I’ll add some photos. I like blogs with photos and few words.

I received 3 comments; one from my daughter, Lisa, telling me she would teach me to post photos; one from  my good friend, Diane, who welcomed me to the neighborhood. But this was the funniest. It was from Mr Tasty Cake and said:

Crazy For Fiber-I must admit I was a little disappointed; I was hoping this would be a blog about shredded mini wheat addiction, nevertheless it was a joy to visit. Cheers and nice fiber!

So here is the deal, I have the older Spooner Lake Aspens which I showed a few blogs ago.

I am now constructing two new Aspen pieces. One is going to the Art for Autism auction. The other plus the older one will be give aways to two people who comment on my blog.  I will do a random drawing on Friday.

Up at the top, you see the new trees that I made. I fused some of the new painted organza (silk for the person who asked – I never use synthetic) to plain organza and some to more of the painted fabric. This gives a more opaque tree with more dimension. I like it on that landscape, better than the other trees from the dye painted organza.

Many of you commented on the color of the sky in the new landscape I created.

So I got out my trusty Sherrill Kahn travel paint studio which is cute little bottles of Jacquard Dynaflow paints.

I used a couple of blues and painted the sky darker.

I like the original trees with this landscape which I have not quilted as yet.

Thank you all so much for helping with my design dilemma. It was fun to hear from so many of you. Tomorrow, I have to get back to stitching.

Don’t forget to leave a comment to win some Gericon art.

Painting Fabric — Instant Gratification

splatterpaintcotton

Today, the STASH group painted fabric at Terry’s home. She has a blog post with some photos, too. This piece is my favorite of the day. I didn’t try to do sun printing with this. I painted a base of turquoise and then sponged on some royal blue. After that, I splatterd with a variety of other colors that were available.

My sun printing attempts fell flat. I think the paint was drying to fast because it was rather mild and breezy with no sun. Here are my attempts. My first was this green piece. Before:

After – nada.

This is a silk dupioni that I painted red. I did lots of reddish pieces that I might be able to use for the Passion theme for the next Twelve X 12 challenge. I put washers and jar lids on this.

After, with the companion piece which was painted and sprinkled with salt. I added some spatters of black. You can see a couple of faint circles on the piece on the left.

Here is a detail of the spatter piece.

I also painted some cheese cloth in reds and black. Looks quite passionate, don’t you think?

I had one semi-successful sun print. It was my last piece.

The next piece was painted with orange and blue. I wanted to get a brown color where they mixed. I sprinkled it with coral Setacolor. I like both sides of this piece.

Here is the nice setup in the back yard. We were under a canopy. That is Beth, Terry and Reva. Terry prepared a great lunch. The best part was spending the day with friends.

Working in a Winter Wonderland

snowyday

This is what it looked like outside today, but I felt like this:

heh

I had so much fun in my studio.

My first item of business was to make a screen for the glue to add foil to the dome. This is the best way to foil, using a stencil or some other method to manage the glue. I wanted to just do some highlights. Here is the screen and the glue test on muslin.

domescreen

Here is the dome photo after I trimmed it and glued it to felt batting.

Here is the test foil:

Looks good to me. Here is the real deal. You can see that I have started quilting the wall.

I finished the  Bet Sha’an ruins piece. I decided that I did not want to sandwich it with batting so I painted some canvas for the background.

Here is the piece finished: stitched to the canvas with some thread painting.

Fear of Cutting

Sunday, November 23rd, 2008

I spent way too much time today thinking and over thinking how I wanted to cut my fabrics to start on the Dead Sea piece. I sketched and fretted. Finally, I just had to do it. First I fused every thing. I thought about piecing this, but I can be more free in manipulating the curves and design if it is fused.

Here are some of the elements that I have constructed so far.

And here is another piece; I added metallic white and copper bits.

M & M have no school this week. Tomorrow, we are taking Miles out for his birthday adventure. We are going to the Lego store and out to lunch. I hope to remember to take my camera. We love to have time with each of the kids on their own. It is really precious time.
