redcollageprinted

At some point over the last 24 hours, ir occurred to me that one of the printing blocks I bought on Wednesday would be a great counterpoint to the work I have done so far on the red organza collage. It is always a leap of faith to print on a piece that is well underway and quilted, to boot. But, I really like how it has taken this piece to a new level.

I did some discharge on red silk and red cotton. It is drying and I will heat it tomorrow to see what happens. I am still hoping to do another shrinky dink quilt.

Have a great week-end and happy solstice!

A Good Day

fiestaframe

After the nasty driving day yesterday, I woke up to a beautiful morning. I took this photo of the sky on Scooter’s early morning walk.

We didn’t go to church because the Shamrock Run was going on in Portland and it is almost impossible to get through town in the morning. So, I headed to the studio to start painting the canvas frame for my SDA member’s show piece. Here is the quiltlet. I think it looks pretty good with the frame up there. I am planning to echo the stitching with paint marks.

I had paint left over in cups so  I painted a piece of cotton. I added some green and scarlet to the mix.

I spent an hour skyping with LM, the SDA website manager, taking care of some registration stuff for the conference. She had set up a new interface for me, making part of my job easier. Love that.

This afternoon, I went to an Oregon SDA meeting at Opulent Fibers, a sweet shop with all sorts of felting materials and supplies. Many of our members are very accomplished felters, making garments that are incredible. A couple of the members have been doing eco-dyeing of felt. I am just going to show you swatches of their work. The red leaves are eucalyptus – isn’t that gorgeous.

This is sculptural felting, with roses!

I am looking forward to a more normal week of working in my studio – I have deadlines!!

A Little Help From My Friends

Thursday, July 12th, 2012

Last night. I finished the quilting on this piece. Today, I was showing it to my STASH group in this orientation, as I had designed it. They all said I was holding it the wrong way. Say what? So I turned it and duh, there was the water.

I was so excited by this revelation and so thankful for the wisdom and honesty of friends. I still have to block this and finish the edges. Here is a detail.

We had a good time this morning. There were only four of us as two members are traveling.

After some iced tea and show and tell, we went down to my studio patio where I had set up a table with the gessoed canvas.

I had a table of supplies – plates for palettes, brushes, rags, water, paint, etc.

It was a beautiful morning down there under the deck, and we had fun painting and chatting.

Here is a blurry view of our final canvas:

I am going to cut it into 6 pieces – one for each of us and the challenge is to use it in a finished art quilt. A challenge, for sure.

We enjoyed lunch back up on the deck and sat and chatted for a long time, attempting to solve all the problems of the world.

Here is today’s 3 x 3. A piece of silk that I had spattered with paint at some point in time.

Home Again

What  beautiful scenery and weather awaited us in the high desert of Oregon. I loved seeing the beautiful aspens, once again. This time of year, the leaves are small and green, but still rustle in the wind.

Shortly after we arrived on Wednesday, Terry got us started mixing up flour paste to spread on fabric. And then the mark making commenced.

Here is Suzy making marks on her fabrics with a skewer. And below, is Terry.

Reva brought a piece of fabric that had marks from a previous surface design project.

Here is one of my pieces.

Here is that piece after it dried and started crackling.

The next day, we painted the dried and crackled pieces.

I still have to remove the paste and extra paint from my pieces. I will report on that later.

Do you know why Sisters, Oregon is called Sisters? A trio of mountains is the reason – known as the Sisters.

There are only two in this photo. I am really tired. I’ll be back tomorrow. G’ Night.

I had such a busy day! I took the easy way out with this 3 x 3!!

We had a great time at STASH today. I enjoyed seeing all the new decorating that Gale has done to her home. It really looks fantastic. We shared show and tell, had a guest hang out with us, planned our spring retreat and ate a fantastic lunch, prepared by Gale.

Stuffed peppers:

And a wonderful salad with gorgonzola and hazelnuts.

When I got home, I was full of vim and vigor so I changed my clothes and headed for the studio and tore off two pieces of 28 inch by 65 inch fabric – one is pfd cotton and the other is unbleached muslin. And. I grabbed some brushes, a bowl of water and several colors of Dynaflow paint. I layered the fabric and spritzed it with water and had at it.

I want an abstract background of colors of nature. I will be screenprinting some images and adding some large photos. I am looking forward to working on this when I get back from SF.

I am all packed and ready to go. Out flight is at 8 am so I have to get up at the crack of dawn, pick up Steph and Mia and off to the airport.

Here is a photo of my boy that I took this afternoon. He looks so sleek and trim with his haircut!
