Love Me Some Silk Organza and Paint

Sunday, October 23rd, 2011

That is more like it. I had an epiphany during the night. So this afternoon, I headed to the studio and painted some silk organza with orange and yellow paint. Here it is drying.

I roughly cut the shapes of the poppies and covered the silk poppies on the little quilt.

I stitched around the organza, following the outline of the poppies beneath. Then I trimmed close to the stitching with the result up at the top. I am very happy with this. The organza gives a nice texture, too.

Tomorrow, I will do some free motion quilting to define the petals and add some texture. I also want to add some leaves and am working on how to do that tonight – maybe with hand stitching with Perle cotton or maybe with a little green silk and machine thread work. The leaves are very lacy.

Oregon Old Growth Trees

Tuesday, September 27th, 2011

For the Oregon SAQA State of Diversity juried show, I am attempting to do a quilt about old growth trees. This is a photo that I took and printed on silk – it is about 13″ X 18 “.  I cut it into 4 pieces and mounted each piece on green fabric.

I also have these smaller closeups of trees that and printed them in triplicate.

This is the background fabric:

I am doing a balanced symmetrical layout with some tree trunks framing each side. I am using this fabric for the tree trunks.

It didn’t quite blend in with the other fabric and photos so I went at it with some black and green paint.

This really isn’t a very good photo of the end result.

I got the layout done and started quilting it tonight. The quilting is bringing the piece together. I am feeling better about it than I was this afternoon.

I need to get this finished and photograph it tomorrow so that I can overnight it to arrive on Friday. I am always working up to the last minute.

Endless Summer And Fiesta

Thursday, September 1st, 2011

For the orange Twelve by Twelve colorplay challenge, I painted raw silk and silk organza with Dynaflow paints. I loved the fabric so much, I ended up creating two pieces. The above piece was created by cutting strips of the painted fabric and fusing the composition and then machine stitching.

Here is the raw silk fabric that I painted.

Here is a detail:

As I was working on this, I kept having a flashback to a memory of something. It finally came to me. When we were a young married couple, Mr C and I fell in love with a certain poster that brought a bit of summer to our Schenectady, NY home. So I have named this piece, Endless Summer.

I love painted organza. I have made many pieces with it.

I painted some batting with the orange Dynaflow. I scrunched the organza and pleated it and ironed it and pinned it.

I then started stitching by hand with Perle cotton. I finished it late last night. Whew! I thought perhaps I should name it Insanity, but instead, it has the fun name, Fiesta.

Here is a detail:

Now, I have to decide which one joins the Twelve by Twelve group. Do you have an opinion?

Reminder: if you haven’t left a comment for a chance to win Masters Art Quilts Vol 2, go to yesterday’s post and add your two cents. The drawing will be on Tuesday.

Really Orange

Tuesday, August 2nd, 2011

We are leaving for New York two weeks from today. In that time, I need to get three pieces finished — all small. Two are gifts and I probably won’t post much about them. The third is our last colorplay quilt for Twelve by Twelve. Terry chose orange. She gave us specific directions about the orange — “I want to see a strong, saturated orange ranging anywhere from cheddar to flame, but pure and unadulterated.”

I have some commercial batik oranges, but not much else. I decided that I wanted to play with this a bit so I went out to Art Media to pick up some orange Dynaflow. I also replenished by yellow and scarlet.

I grabbed some raw silk for the texture and a piece of shantung organza, which also has nice texture. I wet the fabric and painted with shades of orange with some yellow.

I hung it out to dry. The joists for the new deck make a great place for me to have a clothesline!

Tonight, I ironed them and had fun adding black markings. I used a tiny paint brush, a pipette, a chop stick, a syringe and a string.

This is the organza piece.

This is probably the last I will show you this as I create my imagined composition out of this fabric.

This little piece is going to a new home:

For a hanger, I found this in the belt making section of Mill Ends and stitched it to the back.

It is nice to have a few days o feeling great and time to be creative.

Every Day

Friday, June 24th, 2011

I am committed to spending some time in my studio every day. Today, I made two more flat felts using the water soluble stabilizer. I need to get out to Fabric Depot to pick up some chiffon to use on these.

I also diluted some black fabric pain with water and painted a lighter shade of gray silk organza. I am very happy with this one which is on the left, original in the center and the darker one on the right.

I am getting my energy back! I went to Pilates this morning and took Scooter for a nice walk before lunch.

I am taking Mucinex, per my Dr’s office instructions, but have to dring a glass of water every hour that I am awake. So, you know where I am spending a lot of time! The good thing is, it is working. Along with the saline rinses, I am feeling much less congested.

The huge all neighborhood Eastmoreland Yard/Garage sale is tomorrow and Sunday. Steph and family will be here early to hit the sales. We always enjoy this and have found some great bargains. The weather promises to be perfect.

Have a great week-end!
