Making Progress

Thursday, April 7th, 2011

I finished Klee’s Castles and I just need to add a label and a sleeve and send it off for the SAQA auction. I had a lot of fun adding the details to this. Here is a detail shot.

I finally got the latest fabric frenzy cleaned up and stored. I have a bag of large fused silk scraps and a bag of smaller pieces.

I can’t bear to throw out the smallest of scraps. They are great for making small works like fabric postcards. I am happy that the studio is neatened and I can start my cityscape this week-end.

We have had some half way decent weather today. It was chilly but mostly sunny and no rain. It is amazing what some sunshine can do to lift your spirits.

Tomorrow, Terry Grant and I are going to the Clark County Quilter’s show in Vancouver, WA. We will be selling and signing the Twelve by Twelve book and showing the colorplay quilts that we have revealed on the blog, so far. I am looking forward to the meet and greet and to see some quilts and maybe spend some money at some of the vendors.

Emotional Roller Coaster

Tuesday, April 5th, 2011

I started the day in a sour mood. I planned to go to my studio and purge it of the piles of fabric and stuff from my last two projects. But, I got distracted. I worked some more on the Klee Castles. I  putzed around with one of the two chartreuse pieces. It needed something else. I did a Constant Contact newsletter for one of the SDA reps.  I moped and got teary eyed.

I am so tired of my clothes, cooking and shopping the same old food, the lousy weather.  My sinuses are blooming because I am in that vortex of winter molds and spring pollen. Mr C is coping by immersing himself in designing our new deck. If I didn’t have my art, I would really be a nut case!!

Today, I got an e-mail that Prairie Fields was accepted into PAQA South ArtquiltsMovement. I wrote an artist statement about zooming across the heartland in a plane and taking a photo that inspired this piece. I thought it was a stretch, but Yay!, I got in.

That turned my day around. I posted it on Facebook and received lots of affirmations from my friends. Tonight, I was finishing work on Klee’s Castles and felt really happy. I love this fabric that I put on the back.

I think I will donate this piece to the SAQA auction.

The first photo up there are some photo-shopped photos for the next piece I want to do which will be the Portland skyline with a sunset sky. It is a view that we often see from our side of the river. Under the sketches is part of the mess that I still need to clean up.

A Two Meeting Day

Wednesday, March 9th, 2011

This morning I attended the quarterly Columbia Fiberarts Guild meeting which included demos by four members and nice catered lunch. It is one of my favorite meetings of the year because we get to socialize and chat and share. In the afternoon, the SAQA area meeting met in the same place. It was almost meeting overload, but I do get energized when I spend time with other creative souls.

I am going to share some photos of the meeting today because I haven’t accomplished much except to unsew the bridges as I plan to start over with them.

This is Maris, our treasurer and felter, extraordinaire. Isn’t that a gorgeous piece of felted silk?

She did the bowls up above. Here is another shot.

Here are some other shots of her table.

Maris called this nebs. They are little loose pieces of wool that she adds to the felting.

Here she demonstrates how she makes a vessel by felting over a ball.

Carla makes amazing scrappy quilts by first stitching all of her scraps into a long strip. You can see a coil of sewn fabric on the table in front of her.

Betty demonstrated how she creates these gorgeous beaded bracelets.

At lunch, we were given a plain white paper placemat that we could decorate with these crayons. I should have taken a photo of the very creative work done at my table.

And, now to close, here are the adorable two guys that I live with. Scooter got a hair cut yesterday. He seems to feel more energetic without all that fur.

Out of the Studio

Thursday, February 3rd, 2011

Yesterday, I did not get near my studio. Pilates, walking the dog, getting my hair cut, attending Miles’ third grade musical, late dinner after we got home — whew. This morning, I taught myself how to use iMovie so that I could upload some videos from the performance.

If someone had told me two years ago that I would watch Miles do two major speaking parts and sing about 15 songs with all of the other children, I would have said no way.  But there he was — making us all beam from ear to ear. His development over the past year has been remarkable. There are times when the autism is evident, but he is much more engaged with us, now.

I was going to upload the video of his portrayal of FDR, but the file is too large.

After a quick walk with Scooter, I met a couple of friends from Trinity to talk about the future of the Arts Committee. The chair for the past several years is stepping down, and we have not found anyone to take on the task — we are a group of artists who are willing to help, but not be the organizer!! I had an idea of someone who might take it on. We met with her, and I think it is going to work out.

Tonight, I finally got down to the studio and happily got four rows of organza pockets sewn to the background. So happy about that!!

Mr C brought in the mail today. I flipped through it and was astounded to see a my High Desert Aspen quilt on the back of a postcard.

It is for the SAQA Oregon show — State of Diversity — which is at the Heritage Station Museum in Pendleton, OR. A lovely surprise.

OK, I have rambled on long enough.

This is a Quilt is Done

Tuesday, January 18th, 2011

I didn’t have heat in the basement studio until late today so it was a good day to sit and do the handstitching on this little sunrise quilt. It is done and on the way to California to be part of the SAQA trunk show. Silk and organza is hard to photograph. I am not sure this looks true to the actual colors.

Here is a detail shot:

I did an undulating running stitch. It looks quite lovely in person.

Yesterday, it was cold in my studio and when I looked at the thermostat it was blank. I put in two new batteries and it showed the time and the temperature, but the furnace did not go on. We thought the furnace needed repair, but it turns out it was the thermostat. $25 later, it nice and cozy in my studio, again.

I entered 3 pieces in the SAQA Volusia fiber show and all 3 were declined. I am determined to not take this personally. I really want to make art that makes me happy and fulfills my vision and not worry about acceptance into particular shows.

I have done some more perusal of the Drawn to Stitch book. One big problem with it, for me, is the list of supplies that are foreign to me. I think it would be a good idea for authors of books like this to list the comparable products in the US. I am going to try to do a couple of more exercises, if I can find comparable products in my studio. I am not going to buy anything new!!
