Got Rust?

Monday, September 20th, 2010

I used some of my fused skinny bits to create this fiber sketch of a forest. I like it. I think it has possibilities for a larger version.

Here are the results of my rust dyeing. A caveat – the pole was so corroded that I could not scrunch the fabric for traditional shibori.

I did the blue-green fabric and a plain white.

Tonight, I overdyed  the white silk with a paler shade of blue-green. I think I will like it a lot. I hope I can combine the two fabrics in the challenge piece.

I spent a lot of time stitching down the pojagi pockets on Allegro. I am getting to close to this piece and am starting to have a love/hate relationship with it. I must finish it – tomorrow, I hope. I first basted the pockets and then zigzagged them down to prevent fraying.

The SAQA auction started today. My piece, Entwined Roots is in the first group of quilts.

The price today was $750.   Tomorrow, the price goes down to $550, then $350, $250, $150 and $75.  Unsold work will be placed on the SAQA website for a month and then returned to the artist. Here is a link to the quilts, if you are interested in supporting SAQA and getting a nice piece of art.

You might notice the new buttons that I have in my sidebar. I got an e-mail from Wikio telling me that I could show my overall ranking for my blog. They have me in the craft category. I don’t know if there is a quilting category. There is a needlearts category. The buttons will change as my ranking changes. It will be embarrassing if it goes down! LOL

Viral Attack

Wednesday, September 15th, 2010

That is what I seem to have and I had fun making this fiber sketch to illustrate how, I feel -frayed edges and all prickly. Yesterday, I didn’t do much except drink liquids, nap and do a little work for SDA.

I have not felt much better today, but I had to get a travel bag and label done for my aspen quilt that is in the Oregon SAQA show which debuts next week at NW Quilt Expo. I created and printed a label on cotton. I made 2 copies.

One got fused to the back of the quilt.

And the other was fused to the bag which I had already sewn up. That strip is covering my phone number.

I save selvage strips and use them as ties for my traveling quilts.

I rolled the quilt on a swim tube, and put it in the bag and it is ready to deliver tomorrow. And now I am out of energy to do anything but watch Top Chef finale.

SAQA Auction Soon

Monday, August 30th, 2010

This is my piece for the annual SAQA auction. I call it Entwined Roots. I used fused skinny bits that were left over from another larger quilt. The SAQA quilts are 12 by 12. The bidding starts on September 20th You can go here to see all of the quilts.

Here are some other quilts that I thought would play nicely with mine. I like the use of lines in these pieces.

I have purchased a piece each year that the auction has been in existence. It is a chance to get a piece of great fiber art and start a collection.

Finished!

Monday, May 31st, 2010

I finished two quilts, photographed them and burned the CD tonight. I love making my goals. Now, all I have to do is overnight the CD to Sisters, OR. I added some leaves off the edges.

The Old Growth Forest did not meet my expectations. I do not like the rigidity, but I think it does evoke an old forest with filtered sunlight. Click on it to see it larger.

I found this curly wood twig which is greener than it photographed. I think it adds a bit of whimsy to the piece.

We had a quiet Memorial Day  — pretty much like any other Monday. This was a good thing because I had work to finish!!

Next on my agenda is to clean up and organize my studio after the paint job. Stuff is still piled in the middle of the room!

Something Different

Wednesday, April 7th, 2010

Here is a sneak peek at the piece I am working on to commemorate 15 years of the Quilt Art list. It was nice to go down to the studio and work on something rather brainless and fun!

I spent most of the day with 5 marvelous women from the Columbia Fiberarts Guild. The Guild has a huge number of slides covering the years of 1966 – 2000. They were gathering dust and were in danger of getting lost in someones attic. We decided that we should pull slides from each year that would represent the work being done. It was so much fun looking at the photos of everything from macrame to fantastic wearable art.

The slides had been catalogued by category. The first thing we did was to sort them by year. Here you can see some of the worker bees and the piles of slides.

We finished sorting and pulling slides for every year. I am so happy to have this finished. They will now be sent to Costco to be burned to DVDs.

I want to thank every one who left a comment about my PAM debacle. I want to make it clear that the embarrassment title was completely tongue in cheek. I was not embarrassed, only quite confused.

Having had some private conversations with people I really respect, I now feel that it was a good thing that I got denied. I do not need this. It is an extra expense without much cache considering the number of artists and the lack of any continuity of the work that is represented.

I am in a really good place with the pace and growth of my work. I just want to be in my studio making stuff.
