SAQA Oregon, a Beginning

Saturday, January 16th, 2010

I first joined SAQA before we left California, 4 years ago. I never got involved with the local group, which was pretty active at that time. When I moved to Oregon, I expected to get involved here, but there was absolutely nothing happening. Recently, we got two new reps, Georgia French and Laura Jaszkowski, from southern Oregon. They are both members of the High Fiber Group, too. They have started organizing meetings. They  had one in Eugene today and the northern area will meet in March.

When looking for a spot for us to meet in March, they approached The Pine Needle quilt shop in Lake Oswego. The owner  was more than happy to have us meet there in the class room, and also invited us to show quilts and be available to share info about SAQA at an open house this week-end. Georgia and Laura gathered some quilts from the group and got them hung at the quilt shop.

I did a 2 hour stint to answer questions today and took some photos of the quilts. That is my sunset composition up there on the left. Apparently lots of people were curious about how I got the orange glow — serendipity!!

Here is June Underwood and Jill Hoddick who were on duty when I arrived. June is speaking to someone on the other side of that counter. Jill teaches costuming at Portland University and has jumped into the art quilting arena and can’t wait until she retires to get more involved.

Here are some other shots of SAQA member quilts.

These are clickable to see them larger.

I have high hopes that we can have a real exhibit of our work in a gallery. You have to start some where!!

I stitched the circle quilt with monofilament polyester thread to stabilize it before I start hand stitching. I can’t wait to do some hand work.

Whew!!

saturdaymarkjayme1

I have been partying  up a storm with the family, celebrating the marriage of these two, my son, Mark, and Jayme. They have not gotten married, yet. They have the rings, they have the commitment, but they are just going to go to city hall in San Francisco some day and do it. Jayme orchestrated a get-together of both sides of the family here in Portland.

On Thursday night, they put together a delightful meet and greet dessert party at the Sellwood Yoga Studio where Mark had done the landscaping for his friends who moved up here from SF. Here is my daughter, Steph and M & M sitting in the courtyard.

On Friday night, we had everyone at our home for a beautiful meal catered by Papa Haydn, a restaurant noted for their desserts.

I had purchased lots of fall flowers  – sunflowers, dahlias and zinnias, which Lisa and Clay arranged in vases for all the tables.

The food was fabulous and the service was impeccable. We received rave reviews from every one. We were able to arranged seating for all who came which required some furniture rearrangement. We like the new living room arrangement so much that we are going to keep it for awhile.

Saturday was the day for the picnic out on Sauvie Island at the Kruger Farms. We awoke to a steady rainfall, but the weather forecast called for sun by the afternoon. And we were not disappointed. What a great time we had. This was coordinated by Mark and Jayme. They bought the food, rented a huge BBQ, and thought of every detail for a fun time in the country. Some of Jayme’s relatives cooked some great sides and Stephanie made killer cookies.

We took Scooter with us. It was his first long drive for an adventure. He had a great time. There was the cutest little dog who lives on the farm who kept running over to our site to play with Scoot. He looks like a cross between a chihuahua and a Jack Russel Terrier.

We were right next to the corn maze and at one point, Scooter ran off into the maze and it took some time to find him.

Here is a photo of everyone who was there, except the photographer.

We took about 6 attempts to get a photo of our family. Here is one of the takes. It is almost impossible to get Miles to look at the camera, especially when his Uncle Mark is giving him the elbow!!

It was a wonderful 3 days. We loved Jayme’s family. We loved having Steve’s brother Mike and some of his family and David who came all the way from Florida. Right now, I am pretty exhausted. If you are interested in seeing all the photos that I took, they can be seen on this Flickr set, Mark and Jayme Celebration.

Here is some other stuff going on in my life. I was very excited to have Mystical Forest purchased on the first day of the SAQA auction for $750 by Teri Springer, who is becoming a patron since she owns two of my pieces.

I didn’t get into Quilts=Art=Quilts this year. I am disappointed, but that frees the work to enter in another show.

I now have the correct diagnosis for my brother-in-law, Ray. He has myelodysplastic syndrome which prevents the making of white blood cells. The only treatment is a bone marrow transplant, and he is considered to old to get it. I am deeply pained for my sister and her children and grandchildren.

There is a lot of other stuff rattling around in my brain, but it will wait for another day.

Coming Up for Air

The SAQA auction is doing very well this year. The first set of pieces made $13,625 to benefit SAQA programs. The next set of quilts are up for bid tomorrow at 11 am PST. My piece, Mystical Forest, is in this group. Here is a link to the page if you are interest in placing a bid – SAQA Auction.

We are having busy times around her. Jayme arrived yesterday to help Mark make arrangements for the two events that they are hosting. Lots of visits to The Party Place, Ikea and Costco. They have ordered ribs, sausage and chicken breast to grill on Saturday at the picnic. Tomorrow night is a dessert cocktail party at the Sellwood Yoga studio, owned by former San Francisco friends of Mark, tomorrow night.

This morning I went to a pre-op appointment with Mr C who has surgery next Thursday. Then, Kevin gave me a new redder hair color and a shorter cut, which I am loving. Then it was off to the Farmer’s Market to get flowers for the house and then I picked up supper goodies for us and Steve’s brother and wife who arrived from California tonight.

To add to the excitement around here, yesterday, the washing machine quit with a load of Mark’s clothing locked inside. We finally found someone to come and service it. He found a needle in the drain pipe or filter, or something which had caused the machine to clog and not drain. I am baffled about how the needle got in there, but I have been known to use my shirt as a holding spot for needle and thread when I am hand sewing.

Tomorrow, I will spend time spiffing up the house for the Friday party. We hope to be able to seat 35 people with tables here and there and some additional rented chairs. I rearranged the living room furniture and I love it.

I received sad news about my brother-in-law who has leukemia. He had a serious problem with the atrial fibrillation on Sunday and is now on a respirator. They have also found either melanoma or lymphoma in the bone marrow. The sister who called was not sure which, but the upshot is, there really is no treatment they can do for him at this stage. I am having a hard time managing the happy times here and knowing what the family back in New York is going through.  So these are bittersweet times for me.

I will try to post some photos of our happy times, if I remember to take a camera.

Just Another Not So Manic Monday

spoonerlakeaspens

Today was a nice normal, yet busy Monday. A welcome relief from the end of last week! This is my 994th blog post. I plan to have a drawing when I do my 1000th post and this little Spooner Lake Aspens quilt could be available to the winner.

Yesterday (Sunday), I decided to look for exterminators to rid us of our yellow jacket infestation. I found someone in our neighborhood who works 7 days a week and specializes in bee, wasp and hornet extermination. We called and he was here in less than an hour. He had nothing nice to say about yellow jackets. We are happy to have them gone.

Yesterday morning, we finally had our family gathering for breakfast at a local restaurant. The walls were decorated with delightful children’s drawings.

Mia did this one to add to the mix.

We took Lisa to the airport in the late afternoon. All that is left is her paint palette, on a piece of glass, which I found in my studio today.

Earlier this month, I made a to do list with some large projects that had been nagging at the back of my mind. I am so pleased with the progress that I have made. I have inventoried and safely stored all of my quilts. I updated my website. I have made some great progress getting organized for the big family to do next month. One thing that I started on tonight and am having doubts about, is applying for Professional Artist Membership in SAQA.

I hope to get back into the studio tomorrow. I have creative work to do!!

Loving the Long Days of Summer

m&m&scooter

We have not had perfect weather, but we have had pretty great weather — a little rain and a lot of sun breaks. The family came over yesterday for a Dad’s day barbecue. Miles and Mia have so much fun playing with Scooter, and he loves the vigorous play that they provide.

When I went down to my office today, I found this created from my magnetic words.

wisdomwords

I suspect Mia did this, but I don’t know for sure. I love it.

I spent a lot of time working on the SAQA auction quilt. I haven’t been doing a lot of free motion quilting, and felt a bit inept. At one point I had a huge thread nest on the back of the quilt which I had to rip out. Mr C was helping Jack and Steph put drywall on their kitchen ceiling so there was no one around but the dogs to hear my frustration.

In the end, I am saisfied with the result. I think the fabric makes this piece and I was afraid of mucking it up with stitching. Here it is. I have titled it Mystical Forest.
