Another Crazy Week

Friday, September 28th, 2012

Here it is Friday and I am so behind in my studio work. Tomorrow, I am heading down to Newberg to see Regina Benson’s exhibit and attend her lecture. Then tomorrow night we have a dinner date with Mr C’s boss and some other former GE employees.

Yesterday, I didn’t get much done except take part in back to back SDA conference calls and a Go To Meeting computer conference. Then I picked up M & M at school while Jack and Stephanie were off celebrating their 15th anniversary. We had such a good time with the kiddos. I love having them come to stay with us.

So, of course, it was a busy morning getting them off to school. I managed to select the background for my maverick twelve piece and got it quilted.

I will have to boogie to get this done on Sunday for a Monday reveal.

Here is my latest acquisition from the SAQA auction.

I have long been a fan of Yael David-Cohen’s work.

My daughter, Lisa, who is home from her 3-week trip to Scandinavia, is not letting any grass grow under her feet. She released her second font designed in collaboration with a font designer. I am excited to say that it is named after me – Geraldine.

Isn’t that cool. You can find out more about it, here.

And here is today’s 3 x 3.

Not in My Groove Yet

Wednesday, September 26th, 2012

Tried my hand at fused bias strip weaving. I was in a hurry so this was not planned that well, but I like it.

I am having a problem, after a week here and there and not feeling well, getting back my studio practice. I made quite a bit of progress on my maverick quilt. The good Lord willing and the creek don’t rise, I think I can have it done by Monday.

Here is a peek a some of what I did today – a batik fish:

Tomorrow, I have back to back SDA conference calls and training. I am picking up M & M from school, and they will spend the night with us while Steph and Jack celebrate their anniversary in Astoria. So tomorrow will not find me in the studio for much time.

I don’t think I have shared the 12 x 12 SAQA auction quilt that I bought last week. It arrive this week and is really lovely. It has wonderful machine quilting on it and is by Elin Noble. The title is Snow Angels.

We started watching Wallander on PBS and decided we needed to see previous episodes. So we are starting with Season 1 tonight.

Sleep Deprived

Thursday, September 20th, 2012

I was up at 4 and at the Quilt Show by 5. Our segment didn’t happen until 6:45 so we had a lot of waiting to do!

Here is Drew doing a promo with a long arm dealer.

Here he is with one of the show organizers, Geri Grasvik, and the best of show quilt. One of those Swarovski crystal studded quilts – this one was from Germany.

Here is a link to a video of Terry and I doing our schtick. Enjoy! Our time was cut short so our scripted plan fell apart, but Drew is good at punting and just rolled with it.

I went back out to the show for a bit after lunch and took some photos. You can see some of the Twelve exhibit on the Twelve blog. I came home and slept for two hours so that I could stay awake to watch Project Runway.

Here are two of my quilts in the show.

The lighting on Forest was really harsh as it was hung up quite high.

Here are some quilts that I liked. I put the label for each one underneath.

I was so excited to see this Painted Hills quilt!!

Trisha uses metal in her quilts.

I just love this quilt by my friend Suzy. Many people have chickens in their backyards in Portland – you can have up to 3, but no roosters.

I really love Bonnie’s quilts. I use a lot of her handdyes.

Not much else to say tonight. I am too tired.

I’m Not Crazy?

Friday, June 22nd, 2012

I got the fat e-mail today telling me that this piece, Alternate Universe, was juried into the SAQA show, I’m Not Crazy. It was juried by Sue Reno and curated by Kathy Nida, both very talented fiber artists. I am very honored.

I started this piece over a year ago when the psycho politics of this country was driving me crazy, and I felt as if I had awakened in an alternate universe. It has lots of hand stitching. The design was discharged using a design drawn on freezer paper with the circles creating one side and the holes used for the other side. I tried to show another universe which was in reverse and upside down. I spent a lot of time on this and never really thought of entering it in a show until this theme came up.

I am feeling a bit better tonight. I didn’t get much done today, but Mr C is home to keep me company and so I am feeling much better. We have 11 people for dinner tomorrow night – have to feel better.

Here is today’s 3 x 3:

How Depressing

Thursday, May 31st, 2012

I wanted to do a piece on depression for the SAQA I’m Not Crazy juried show. I have periodic bouts of depression and other members of my immediate family have also suffered from this mental dis-ease. I started with discharged letters that read Can You Hear Me Now, repeated. I used gold deColourant and a stencil.

I then printed depression self-talk on silk organza.

I used Mistyfuse on the back of the organza and then cut out “thought bubbles.” I wonder if we could hear the self talk of victims of depression, could we intervene and help sooner?

I know when I am depressed, I have two personalities. I can put on a smiley face for people, but when I am alone, I fall into the depression self talk mode.

I digress. I fused the thought bubbles to the discharged background and zigzagged the edges.

Here is a detail.

Tonight, Mr C and I went to a harpsichord concert at the Reed College Art Gallery. The harpsichord was played for the first time. It was a work of art built by a Reed Alum who also taught physics there. Then, we went out to dinner. Now, we are watching more The Killing episodes.

The last of the green 3 x 3s. This is what I do when I am out of time and out of ideas!!
