Catch Up Day

Tuesday, December 30th, 2008

Today, I accomplished  a lot of  things that had been hanging out there, just bugging me. I am coming up on a few days which could bring utter chaos to my life — the finishing and hanging of my show and the launching of registration for the Surface Design Off the Grid conference, for which I am the registrar. I am turning the dining room into the registrar’s office so that Mr C can go back to the basement and finish what he had started when I kicked him out!! I have to get copies of letters and supply lists done, buy stamps and envelopes and start the online data entry. Whew!

I made a thermofax from a pdf that Kristin sent me and got it shipped to her. I also whipped up this little gilded pear wall hanging to go into another mailing.

I am one of the invited artists for Virginia Speigel’s Reverse Auction for Fiberarts for a Cause. Because of my show, I could not get a quilt done so I am giving one of my hand-dyed, discharged and foiled scarves. I had a couple of scarves with the discharged circles. For this one, I made a thermofax screen of x’s. I screened the foiling glue onto the scarf:

Then, I ironed on copper foil. I call this the hugs and kisses scarf!

Would you bid on this?

Here is a sneak peek at my next project, which is a wall of Palestinian graffiti and art from photos taken in the West Bank.

Tonight, Mr C and I went to see a really good film — Doubt. It was perfectly cast. All of the actors were superb and gave this film validity. It is not a feel good film. It has some funny moments, mainly provided by the character played by the fabulous Amy Adams.

Potpourri of Activities

Wednesday, December 10th, 2008

Here I am, coming to you from my new IBook Photo Booth. I picked up the new computer yesterday and have been having getting familiar with the new things, like the photo booth – a camera in the laptop.

Yesterday afternoon, Mr C and I drove out to the country to cut our Noble Fir Christmas tree. We met the most delightful owner, who took us way out to the back forty where trees had not been cut and found us the perfect one. We also learned a lot about Christmas tree farming. We will go back there from now on. The tree is up with the new color lights, waiting for M & M to come and help me with the decorating.

This morning, I went to the quarterly Columbia Stitchery Guild meeting. We had a wonderful speaker who is an expert in Kumihimo, Japanese silk braiding. She gave a slide lecture on the history of the braids. We also had our annual silent auction. I scored this gorgeous scarf, made by Carol Heist. The photo was taken from the computer and does not do it justice.

I have been still getting the run around about the fabric. After two promises of a return phone call on the status of my order, today, I e-mailed them and said to cancel the order. Tonight, I got an e-mail saying it had been shipped and they would send me the tracking number tomorrow. Ha! I will believe that when I see it. In the meantime, I came up with another way to print large pieces of fabric that is working very well. I spray basting glue to a large sheet of poster board and then brayer fabric to it, trim and print.

I have been stuck on a piece that should have been very easy to do. Perhaps, I have been over-thinking it. I wanted a collage for the beginning of the show which would highlight “Pilgrimage.” I have played with lots of different images and different backgrounds. I wanted it to represent a page from my journal, so I decided I had to do some handwriting. I am not ecstatic about my final result, but I decided that I had to finish this tonight and move on. I did a few lines of machine stitching and am now hand stitching with some lovely hand-dyed perle cotton.

Here is a close-up.

A Gory, Yet Funny Story

Wednesday, December 3rd, 2008

This morning, I got out of bed and jumped into the shower. I use a color enhancing shampoo. It is red. As I was rinsing my hair, I looked down and the water coming off my head was really red and the more I rinsed, the redder it got. What the? My first thought was I had a cut on my head, but no, I had the mother of all nose bleeds. I turned off the water and grabbed one of the brand spanking clean white towels and pressed it against my nose. Dripping wet I walked out to the bedroom to summon Mr C to come to my aid. He toweled me off and still holding the towel tight against my nose, I put on my robe and got in a prone position on the bed. Mr C went for a bag of ice. I usually get one of these every winter and sometimes it takes hours to get them to stop. They are caused by extremely dry conditions combined with my sinus problems.

Fortunately, it was over fairly quickly. I went back into the bathroom, and I kid you not, it looked like someone had been attacked by an axe murderer. There was blood on the shower walls and the base, on the floor and the rugs and in my sink. We finally got it all cleaned up. I have made it through the day without another one, thanks to some petroleum jelly lining my nasal passages.

Our guest, Olivier, arrived last night, in his very classy duds and his violin. He is really a sweet guy. Mr C and I are ready to adopt him. He is the single father of a little boy. His young wife got bored and left him to go back to the city. He lives in the country north of Montreal. He is French Canadian and speaks with a lovely accent. he declared my messy studio to be a happy place!! he saw my two sewing machines set up side by side and wondered if I had them going at the same time! He has been at rehearsal most of the day. Mr C just left to pick him up.

I am getting nervous. I think my quilt on the SAQA auction may not sell. They go down to $150 tomorrow and $75 on Friday. I hope I don’t have the embarrassment of being sent to the bargain basement.

I wanted to do a piece about Qumran where the Dead Sea Scrolls were found in old urns in caves. In my UFO pile, I had a quilt with urns that I started in a Robbi Eklow class. So I got it out and did the quilting on it. I love the background fabric. It is one I bought from Judy Robinson.

I need to cut and stitch the binding for the cross quilt. Then I will clean up my stuff again and start on the collage pieces.

Work Under Construction

Friday, November 28th, 2008

First, I want to let all my potential patrons know that this piece is available on the SAQA reverse auction site. Today the price is $750. The price goes down $100 a day until the last day, when the price is $75. This is the third and final week. There are lots of great pieces available.

We had a great meal yesterday. Miles discovered Pecan Pie and loved it. I had to send the leftovers home with him. He is so darn cute. In his first grade class, they can volunteer to be expert teachers about something. He has already done paper airplanes. He also wants to teach them about Greek Letters and Roman Numerals and how to draw paper airplanes which is apparently a lot different than making them. Mia is all about Christmas coming and wanted to make sure that I was getting a tree so that she can help me decorate it.

I fell asleep watching TV last night, but I feel renewed today. I weighed in at WW and did not gain too much.

I finished piecing the Jerusalem Cross quilt. I really like this. I like that it will be such a nice counterpoint to the more abstract work that I do. I am not sure how I will quilt it. Very simply, I think. It is about 51 inches square. I matched my points quite well.

I also started quilting the Dead Sea piece. I love how it is looking. I had purchased some gorgeous brown, white and aqua Superior thread at the quilt show in August, and it is perfect. I love the serendipity of that.

Tonight, we had leftovers. The turkey brined in apple cider was devine. So moist and flavorful. According to Mr C, it is the best ever. He says that every year!! But, it really was delish.

Saturday Stuff

Saturday, November 15th, 2008

I am going to do a rare Saturday post. I have veggies roasting in the oven. Mr C is going to grill some turkey breast loins. M & M are arriving soon to have dinner with us and spend the night. Steph was worried that she was wearing out her babysitting time. I told her there is no limit, as long as I do not have plans. I always love to have them come by for some quality time with us.

I scored a great 12 X 12 quilt from the SAQA auction today. This is by Cathy Kleeman. I love her work. She got into Quilt National this year. I have a piece that will be in the third week of the auction. Here is the piece that I am adding to my collection:

I started quilting the hillside houses today. First, I fused it to the batting:

Then I sewed the back to this, right side facings and prepared it for the pillowcase turn. I add a length of wonder under to the wrong side of the backing along the top edge where the rod pocket will go. I cut a slit through the center of the paper and start turning.

Here it is turned and ready for quilting. Whoops, I just got a comment from Terry. She thinks I should have done a solid sky. Too late now! I considered it, but I really liked using the square in a square.

To complement this wonky quilt, I am doing wonky quilting.

I hope to finish this tomorrow and move on to another piece that is running around in my brain.
