Please Vote for Portland & Retail Therapy with Mia

Monday, December 17th, 2007

HGTV has a new program called Change the World. Start at Home. Here is some info from their website.

Change the World. Start at Home is a new community revitalization and environmental cause effort launched by HGTV in partnership with Rebuilding Together, the National Trust for Historic Preservation and the Natural Resources Defense Council. The campaign focuses on revitalizing communities across the country and helping consumers make smart choices for the environment within their homes and daily lives.

Starting November 8th, HGTV and its partners are inviting people across the country to help communities in need become thriving and abundant once again. By visiting hgtv.com/changetheworld, you can vote on communities and projects you feel are most deserving of a makeover. One project in each community will focus on environmentally-friendly improvements while another will focus on a historic place that helps preserve the fabric of the community.

One of the programs in Portland that would benefit from this program is the school that M & M attend.

The Sunnyside Environmental School has been in operation since 1995 and uses an academically challenging educational model intended to foster a sense of community, responsibility and creativity. The teachers focus their lessons on environmental awareness by creating a hands-on learning experience through the Sunnyside Environmental School Garden. This garden allows students, teachers, parents and community members to practice sustainability, environmental responsibility, creativity and community awareness. Since the inception of the environmental program, Sunnyside has tripled its enrollment. Because of this rapid growth, the Garden Classroom has very limited space for students. HGTV and its partners can help create an “Outdoor Garden Classroom” and maintain a high level of environmental awareness for these concerned students.

So, I am asking all of my friends out there to go HERE and vote for Portland. You can vote once a day through December 21. Thank you, thank you!

On a lighter note, today I took Mia to Nordstrom for some retail therapy to celebrate her birthday. We had so much fun. The sales clerks gave her a bag full of goodies for her birthday. They helped us select clothes to try on. Mia said. “I felt so special having people do nice things for me.” Shouldn’t a little girl feel special on her birthday?

We selected a sweater and scarf that matched the skirt her Aunt Lisa sent her. It looked so cute, she wore it home.

She also picked out this very trendy cap in wool plaid.

She also scored a really cute pair of shoes which I didn’t get to photograph. They are canvas mary janes with polka dots and flowers – so cute. In general, I was appalled at the selection of clothing for an 8 year old. So much of it looked like something a street walker might wear, but in a child’s size. I expected more from Nordie’s.

We met up with the rest of the family at the Japanese restaurant with the uncomfortable name, Bush Garden. Mr C suggested that we not get the Bush Roll. We had wonderful sushi and sashimi. I had some Pearl Sake, made here in Portland. Here is Miles enjoying a Shirley Temple.

And now, I am wrapped in a blanket on the sofa with my laptop. I have a serious case of the sniffles and a scratchy throat. My first cold of the season. Hope that it is short lived.

A Birthday Party

Sunday, December 16th, 2007

Tomorrow is Miss Mia’s birthday. She will be 8. Today, she and eight friends celebrated. Here, she sits, waiting for them to arrive.

The theme was “Woodland.” Steph had all the makings for little terrariums.

Here are some of the completed works ready to go home.

My daughter is such a great Mom and party giver. Mia’s favorite part was probably this: opening pressies!

Tomorrow, Mr C and I are picking her up after school. We are going downtown to go shopping and to take in the Christmas decor. Then, we will meet up with the rest of the family for sushi.

My son-in-law, Jack, made my day. He asked me if I had gotten my hair cut – yes – Well, he said he liked it!!

I got all of the Christmas Mod Log Cabin Table runners sent off to the recipients. I took these two photos, using my table. This is the one that I gave to Steph:

This is the green dupioni runner.

I have to make one more dupioni runner for myself. I love them.

Now, I have a request to all of my Blogspot blogging friends. Recently, I was only able to leave a comment with a Google id or as anonymous. Now, I see that there is a new comment pop-up thingy so that I can use my WordPress ID, but I can’t get it to work. Does anyone know the secret. Does the blog have to have the option turned on in their settings? Help me, if you can.

Thursday This and That

Thursday, December 13th, 2007

I read in the Oregonian this morning that Portland is second in the number of bloggers in the nation. Number 1 is Austin, Texas. I don’t think I know any bloggers from Austin. If you are reading this and are a blogger in Austin, please leave a comment and let me know.

Is this a result of global warming or a trick of Mother Nature? We have an azalea blooming in our yard.

What would you do? Spend $69 on a slip cover or buy a new sofa? We decided to give the slip cover a try. The Christmas pillows are really old. I made them from Christmas Pot Holders that I appliqued to a colorful pillow cover. The beautiful wool coverlet was a Christmas gift from Lisa a couple of years ago. This is Mr C’s office.

Project Runner continues. I did a nice decorative embroidery edge on this dupioni runner to match the decorative stitching I did in the center block.

I cut, stitched and started hand sewing bindings for the four Christmas fabric runners.

I ran out of green fabric for the runners with the green Christmas borders. So, I bound them in contrasting red fabric that was used in the center blocks. They look great.

I, who never owned and I-pod before a month or so ago, now have two. The Nano I bought did not have enough memory for all of our cd’s so I bought another one with lots more memory. It arrived today and so I uploaded all of our music and added the Christmas music which I had not imported to I-tunes, yet.

And so that is how I have been keeping busy today. Mr C, the great dad that he is, went to Steph’s today and helped her finish painting her dining room in preparation for Mia’s birthday party this week-end.

Project Runner

Wednesday, December 12th, 2007

I am sitting here watching Project Runway and thought this would be a great blog title. I am not going to bore you with more pictures of my Mod Christmas Table Runners. Suffice it to say that the quilting is finito. I just have the bindings to cut, machine and hand stitch. I want to FedEx them by the end of the week. I’ll watch some movies and get them finished tomorrow.

The best news of the day is that I lost 1 and a half pounds this week. I think I have worked my way past the plateau I was on.

I survived going to guild today without wearing a paper bag over my head so I just took this photo to show how short my hair was cut.

Mod Christmas Table Runner Update.

Tuesday, December 11th, 2007

I have all four table runners pieced and trimmed, ready for sandwiching and quilting.

Here is a close-up so that you can see the background fabric.

The green fabric says Christmas in cursive handwriting. The red on the left is a marble with red circles, you can’t really see it in this photo. The other is a red on red quilty pattern.

I have the binding stitched to the red dupioni runner and am ready to handsew the backside.

Tomorrow is the quarterly Columbia Stitchery Guild meeting. I have to make a mad dash to weigh in at WW and then back and across the river to Lake Oswego for the meeting.

That is about it for tonight. Ta!
